January was one of the strongest months for Twitch’s viewership in a long time, and February is continuing the trend, although with slightly less successful metrics. A combination of coverage of esports events and special streaming-related events boosted the purple platform’s viewership. In total, the platform generated 1.769B Hours Watched for the month, marking an 8% decrease compared to January.
Although an 8% drop in watch time sounds disastrous, the fewer days available in February for the platform to generate viewership do directly affect these metrics. In terms of general viewership, Twitch recorded 2.59M Average Viewers throughout the entire month, only a 2% decrease compared to the previous month.
Despite the many decreasing dynamics across metrics, Twitch was still successful in February. Excluding the previous month, 2.59M AV marks the highest average viewership Twitch has seen in two years. The 8% drop in Active Channels and the 5% drop in Peak Channels are both warped by the fact that these figures grew enormously throughout December of 2023 and January of 2024.
Compared to the majority of 2023, Twitch did record an increased amount of Active and Peak Channels. Historically, January and February are particularly powerful months for Twitch’s viewership, so these high figures are not unexpected.
Most Watched Games and Categories on Twitch, February 2024
Just Chatting and Grand Theft Auto V remained the most popular categories on Twitch, accumulating 248.6M Hours Watched and 151.5M Hours Watched, respectively. Just Chatting recorded the highest average viewership metric of any category for the month with 364K Average Viewers, however, both Just Chatting and GTA V saw a slight drop in viewership for February.
League of Legends recorded 126.6M Hours Watched throughout the month and recorded the highest peak viewership of all categories on Twitch. The esports season for League of Legends has already kicked off, and the viewership for the regional leagues around the globe is boosting the game’s viewership on Twitch. The Korean LCK league is the most popular of these regional events, and it contributed heavily to the category’s overall viewership.
The two five-a-side shooters Valorant and Counter-Strike secured fourth and fifth positions in this ranking. Valorant earned 89.1M Hours Watched, largely thanks to the Kickoff esports events in the Pacific region, EMEA, and the Americas. Valorant recorded a 60% higher Average Viewers figure and a 178% increase in Peak Viewers.
Counter-Strike enjoyed similar success thanks to IEM Katowice 2024 and the qualifier RMR events for the upcoming PGL Copenhagen Major. Although Counter-Strike’s dynamics across Hours Watched, Peak Viewers, and Average Viewers were not as high as Valorant’s, the classic shooter managed this with far fewer channels broadcasting the game. On average, Counter-Strike recorded triple the Viewers per Channel that Valorant could manage throughout February.
Fortnite fell towards the latter half of the ranking, but the game enjoyed a boost in viewership thanks to the return of the Fortnite Champion Series. February saw the first of three Majors take place for the esports side of Fortnite, which helped make up for the fewer channels broadcasting the game. Fortnite recorded 67.8M Hours Watched throughout February, marking a 1% increase in viewership, although the game also saw a 11% drop in Average Channels.
Dota 2 continued the trend of esports being a saving grace for viewership of Twitch categories. Similar to Fortnite, Dota 2 experienced a drop in channels broadcasting the game on Twitch but managed to record an 8% increase in watch time. In total, the MOBA title recorded 44.7M Hours Watched.
Call of Duty: Warzone recently released a Season 2 update patch which has helped the shooter to retain some viewership. Despite this, watch time and average viewership are both declining for the title. Warzone generated 35.6M Hours Watched, just slightly more than the last remaining Battle Royale game on this ranking.
Apex Legends experienced a 49% increase in watch time thanks to two factors: the beginning of the ALGS esports events and the release of Season 20. Esports events have clearly boosted the game’s viewership, but the new seasonal update caused a 105% increase in Peak Channels for the month. Due to a large influx of streamers returning to the title, Viewers per Channel fell by 42%. Throughout February, Apex Legends garnered 32.4M Hours Watched.
Minecraft ranked 10th in February’s rankings, dropping from 9th position in last month’s statistics. The block game generated only 26.7M Hours Watched, a significant drop from the 45.5M HW it generated in January. Minecraft remains as popular and ubiquitous in online culture as ever, however, the game experienced negative dynamics in watch time, peak viewership, and average viewership.

加藤純一です (kato_junichi0817) is a popular Japanese streamer, and throughout February he received 5.63M Hours Watched. Although a variety of his content is popular, his coverage of Valorant esports events was by far the most-watched. In total, the American streamer collected 5.54M Hours Watched.

Squeezie covered their Valorant game against Vitality, and Gotaga covered their finals match in the RLCS against Karmine Corp, another famous French organisation.
Finally, IRL Brazilian streamer JonVlogs received 152K Peak Viewers for a special stream where he planned to give away a car.

Papaplatte is one of the most well-known content creators to emerge from the DACH region, and throughout February Papaplatte hosted some of the most-watched Elden Ring streams of the month. Mira received 1.27M Hours Watched, thanks to her constant streams throughout the month. She was live for almost 650 hours throughout the month and featured the lowest average viewership of all streamers in this ranking. xChocoBars, Chica, and LuluLuvely all advertised the same event to reach their peak viewership: the TurboTax Expert Invitational. xChocobars was the most successful with 42K Peak Viewers, but Chica was not far behind with 35K Peak Viewers recorded. LuluLuvely even set a new personal record when she reached 33K PV, breaking her previous record by more than 5K concurrent viewers.
