Fifa’s annual awards ceremony, streamed on the FIFA+ streaming service and the organization’s official YouTube last night, saw millions finding out if their favorite player had won anything. Those of Argentinean and Spanish dispositions were not disappointed, as Lionel Messi was declared the winner of the men’s category, while the female gong went to Alexia Putellas for the second straight year.

With the likes of Messi, Kylian Mbappe, and Karim Benzema nominated, The Best FIFA Football Awards 2022 broadcast enjoyed quite a lot of success. The official YouTube handle of FIFA ended up becoming the third-most viewed channel over the past seven days, thanks to the awards show going live. Interestingly, three of the top ten entries streamed for less than an hour.

This meant that the broadcast was only behind the CazéTV (YouTube) and official Kings League (Twitch) channels in terms of most concurrent viewers over the past week, once again proving the drawing and staying power of football the world over.

As expected, the viewership numbers hit their peak towards the end of the stream, when it was finally revealed that Messi had won the FIFA Best Men’s Player award. The 2022 World Cup-winning captain remains perhaps the most popular sportsperson globally today, and this FIFA broadcast record served to only further prove this point.
