The streamer of the Year by Esports Awards, 5M YouTube followers, top 1 Spanish Twitch streamer, the new record on the New Year’s Eve — all these facts are about Ibai Llanos. Streams Charts decided to tell you why Ibai is a phenomenon of the last year and how much his channel grew in 2020.
The background of the Twitch success
Ibai Llanos has started his way as a caster in the League of Videogames Professionals (LVP — is a large Spanish tournament operator). He mainly covered League of Legends, and you could have seen him casting LEC, LCS, and even World Championship. Sometimes he tried different disciplines and entertained the audiences of Fortnite, FIFA, and Rocket League.
Apart from esports, he commented on traditional football during the Spanish La Liga: he analyzed the matches of Real Madrid vs. Atletico Madrid and Barcelona vs. Athletic Bilbao.
Thanks to his expressive commenting style and incredible charisma, Ibai quickly gained fans, so when he switched to streaming, he already had his own audience. One of the reasons for the new step in his career was the pandemic because offline tournaments were canceled, and all the attention switched to community streamers.
The achievements of 2020
During the past year, Llanos has been very productive: new records, own events, “Streamer of the Year” award. We found out which category the streamer devoted the most time to, as well as how much his channel has grown.
Just Chatting became Ibai’s most popular category — 24.8M Hours Watched. This category brought him the most significant number of new followers — 1,5M.
You can’t keep the audience only with storytelling, so Ibai created new formats for his channel as Ibaivision, an analog of the European music competition. As a result, Ibai Llanos became the most popular Spanish-speaking streamer in 2020 by Hours Watched and was the 4th in the Just Chatting category.
Ibai received 20% of Hours Watched thanks to Among Us, another phenomenon of 2020. This game got a lot of attention on his channel during last year’s Q3 — 136K Peak Viewers.
If we compare the Hours Watched of Llanos’ channel for the fourth quarter of 2019 and 2020, the difference is incredible: 579K vs. 35M. The second and third quarters of 2020 were almost at the same level, but in the fourth quarter the Hours Watched growth compiled 116% compared to Q3! The number of Average Viewers also increased by 86%.
Ibai and charity
La Liga Santander Challenge at the end of March became the first charity tournament for Ibai in 2020. In early spring, the whole world was on lockdown due to the outbreak of a pandemic. On the contrary, the gaming community united to help people in need. The event’s goal was to raise money to fight the coronavirus, and the organizers did a great job: the total amount was 180K euros.
Another charity tournament by Llanos was Ibainéfico. In 2019, Ibai gathered Twitch celebrities offline, but the format in 2020 changed due to the pandemic.
The event took place from December 16 to 18, and its main goal was to raise money for UNICEF. In total, more than 50 streamers participated in the marathon, including TheGrefg and Auronplay. They were joined by stars like soccer player Sergio Agüero and Spanish journalist Josep Pedrerol.
For a couple of days players fought in Fortnite, Fall Guys, League of Legends, and other popular titles. The Viewers Peak reached the mark of 206K People. We’ve determined how long the viewers stayed at the broadcasts: 18,7% of people spent less than five minutes on broadcasts, and 15,5% of the audience stayed from ten to fifteen minutes. In just three days, streamers managed to collect $205,000, which went to charity.
Whom do Ibai’s viewers prefer to watch?
We’ve determined the top 5 Spanish-speaking streamers and how their audiences intersected with Ibai in 2020. 58% of Ibai’s fans watch Auronplay and Rubius, and TheGrefg is only 2% behind. Surprisingly, juansguarnizo's audience rarely switched to other streamers' broadcasts - a maximum is 23%.
2021 — The new beginning
The end of 2020 was special for Ibai. On New Year's Eve, he has set a personal record: 552K Peak Viewers watched his New Year’s broadcast. So the celebration of 2021 switched to the party because of the new achievement.
The signing with European organization G2 Esports in February 2020 was another boost for Ibai’s popularity, but at the end of the contract, Ibai decided to quit. The reason was the creation of his own company, which included his colleagues from G2 Barbeq, Ander, and Reven.
On January 25, the remaining Ibailand participants were announced: IamCristinini, Werlyb, KNekro, and IlloJuan. The announcement of the new team on Twitch gathered 405K Peak Viewers for 2,6 hours of broadcasting. A total of 558K Unique Viewers watched the broadcast, and 90% of that number watched Ibai’s streams at least once for the last month.
Ibai's success is the result of evident hard work on his content and with his audience. Read our other articles about Phenomena 2020 dedicated to Gaules, NA'VI and other interesting events of the past year.
