One of the most massive events in the history of the Internet, Reddit Place 2022, finished on the night of April 4. For four days, platform users from all over the world were creating real art, simultaneously painting a huge 1000x1000 pixel canvas in different colors. Many popular content creators from Twitch and other platforms participated in the event, and thanks to their huge fan bases, they carved out a place for themselves in the big picture, making their own mini-images.
Streams Charts tells about the history of the event, its results in 2022, the intense battle between French and Spanish creators, and the viewership records set thanks to Reddit Place 2022.
What is Reddit Place?
The idea for the event belongs to Reddit programmer Josh Wardle. In 2017, a sort of experiment began on "Fools' Day" on the /r/place subreddit: registered users were asked to paint one of the 16 suggested colors on a huge canvas every 5 to 20 minutes with one of the pixels. Three days later, the event was over, and the final image seemed like an illustration of the Internet culture of that time: video games, movies, anime and sports fans, as well as people from different countries who simply wanted to paint the flags of their states in a common picture.
After five years, Reddit decided to hold another event. Reddit Place 2022 was much bigger than in 2017: it lasted four days instead of three, the number of colors offered for use grew to 32, and there were six times as many participants compared to the 2017 event — six million people!
How was Reddit Place 2022?
Video bloggers and streamers had an appreciable role in the event: they coordinated their fans in social networks, which resulted in real battles between various communities on the Reddit Place page. The participants ranged from little-known creators to the real stars, including xQc, Ibai, Kamet0, ZeratoR, and others.
Four days of battle in 10 minutes
At first the participants of the event painted the flags of different countries, and especially active were Ukrainians and those who sympathized with the country during its war with Russia. Over time, the participants of the event dispersed over the canvas and began to capture small sections of the big picture: Star Wars fans gathered in one place, fans of the rapper Playboi Carti — in another, fans of osu! — in a third one.
Toward the end of the event, the top Twitch streamers showed up, and xQc became one of the main stars: the platform's top troll began competing with participants from France. His fans actively painted over the Eiffel Tower with characters from "Asterix and Obelix".
"Kamet0, we're coming" — a message to the French streamer from Ibai
Even more intense battle was between French (Kamet0, ZeratoR and others) and Spanish streamers (Ibai, Rubius, Auronplay). The rivalry between Kamet0 and Ibai was especially heated: both fought for the same part of the canvas and tried to draw the logos of their esports organizations — Karmine Corp and KOI, respectively.
The event was covered by all the top streamers of the platform, and some even set records on their channels. Among them was Kamet0: on the final day of the event his broadcast was watched by 420K people concurrently! Likewise channel records were also set by xQcOW (294K Peak Viewers) and the Turkish creator Elraenn (almost 168K Peak Viewers).
It is noteworthy that creators who covered Reddit Place 2022 made it into the top 10 Twitch streamers by Peak Viewers during the event. The only exception was the Brazilian creator casimito.
