Breakdown of English-speaking Twitch streamers in Q1 2021 — who are they and what their viewers preferred
Share:

Streams Charts analyzed the top 100 Twitch streamers for the first quarter of 2021 (January-March) that streamed in the English language. This article will tell you how many Americans are among them, what categories their viewers preferred, and what number of female streamers entered the rating.

Disclaimer: the analyzed rating was sorted by Hours Watched (hours that viewers spent watching streamers' broadcasts). Channels of studios or gaming communities, such as  ESL_CSGO LEC, and Fextralife, were excluded.

This article is presented to you with the support of Fundky LIVE — the #1 Canadian live stream platform for fundraisers

During Q1 2021, the top 100 English-speaking streamers generated 845M Hours Watched — that's 13.7% from all of Twitch’s Hours Watched during Q1 and 27.84% from Hours Watched of all English-speaking streamers on the platform.

The top 100 included 66 representatives from the USA, 11 from Canada, 9 from the UK, 5 from Sweden, 4 content makers from Australia, 2 from South Korea and one each for New Zealand, Mexico and Ireland.

The largest contribution to the overall top 100 English-speaking streamers was made by streamers from the United States  — 541.2M Hours Watched. summit1g, ludwig, HasanAbi and NICKMERCS stood out among other American streamers — in total, these ‘big four’ brought in almost 100M Hours Watched.

In Q1 2021, Hours Watched of the top 100 English-speaking streamers grew by 16.6% compared to Q4 2020. Therefore, Hours Watched of male streamers also increased by 17.5% in the Q1. The largest contribution was made by xQcOW: he gained 9.1% of all male streamers’ Hours Watched and 50.9% of Canadians in the top 100.

In 2020, viewers of Felix “xQcOW” Lengyel spent over 151.8M hours watching his streams. In the first three months of 2021, xQc had already gained half of this amount.

The top 100 English-speaking streamers in Q1 included only 6 girls, the same number as in the previous quarter. Their Airtime increased by 70 hours compared to Q4 2020, but viewers spent 3.9% less watching their broadcasts — 28.3M Hours Watched.

Another representative of Canada in the ranking, Imane “pokimane” Anys, is the #1 Twitch content maker among girls and the most watched female English-speaking streamer in Q1 2021. Viewers spent 6.95M hours watching her broadcasts, which is 24.5% of the girls’ total number in the top 100 English-speaking streamers.

The top 10 streamers of Q1 included 7 United States representatives and 2 Canadians — xQc and shroud. The closest competitor to xQc was Jared “summit1g” Lazar with 28.6M Hours Watched. Lazar’s metric increased by 81.6% compared to the previous quarter.

The third place is taken by ludwig. In March, he launched a streaming marathon on Twitch: each paid subscription extended the broadcast’s duration. This helped the streamer increase his numbers by the end of the quarter — his Hours Watched grew by 146% over the Q4 2020.

The biggest growth among top 10 streamers was shown by DreamSMP Team member RanbooLive. His Hours Watched are up by nearly 20M from Q4 2020.

The only UK streamer in the top 10 was Tubbo, another DreamSMP player. Similar to RanbooLive, the main category of his broadcasts was Minecraft. Tubbo increased his Hours Watched by 56% compared to Q4 2020.

Among girls, pokimane became the leader in terms of Hours Watched. The Canadian went live for only 273 hours throughout January-March, but viewers spent an impressive 6.95M hours watching her streams. itsHafu, Jinnytty, Amouranth, Ash_on_LoL and fuslie were the other female streamers who entered the top 100.

Ash_on_LoL, the only female Australian streamer in the top 100 English-speaking streamers, showed significant growth. Her Hours Watched grew by 284.7% compared to Q4 2020 to just over 4M.

American fuslie became the last female content maker in the top 100 English-speaking streamers but also showed high growth. In the first quarter, viewers spent 3.87M hours watching her broadcasts, almost double her amount in the previous quarter.

Amouranth, the leading female streamer in April, also boosted her metrics in the first quarter of 2021. Her Hours Watched increased by 36% to over 4.07M.

The most popular category among viewers of the streamers analyzed was Grand Theft Auto V. Out of 100 content makers only 34 people streamed in this category, but viewers spent over 125.25M hours watching GTA V streams (14.8% of the total Hours Watched).

Just Chatting attracted the highest number of streamers — 81 people from the top 100 streamed in this category at least once between January and March. At the same time, the title took 3rd place by Hours Watched — 82.96M or 9.8% of the total.

The top five also included Minecraft (2nd place with 91.52M Hours Watched), Rust (4th place with 78.25M) and Call of Duty: Warzone (5th place with 70.82M).

The most popular game among viewers of male streamers in top 100 was also GTA V — 124.64M Hours Watched, or 15.26% of the total number of Hours Watched for male streamers. The games’ positions have changed in the Airtime ranking, and Minecraft has been replaced by Fortnite.

The preferences of the female audience are completely different: the most popular category among viewers was Just Chatting, in which female streamers themselves also streamed the most.

In total, viewers spent over 7.9M hours watching girls' IRL streams (27.9% of the total female Hours Watched from the top 100). Notice that the top 5 categories for girls included VALORANT and Among Us.

During our analysis, we determined the audience overlap among the top 5 English-speaking streamers in Q1 2021. As we can see, xQc, summit1g, and HasanAbi have the highest overlap percentages — over 50% of the audience of the former two also watched xQc’s streams in Q1 2021.

Note: the rows indicate the % of that channel’s audience that watch other channels’ streams, and the columns indicate the % of that channel’s audience collected from other channels.

e.g. 54.6% of summit1g viewers also watch xQc, but 21% of xQc viewers also watch summit1g.

In the case of female streamers, the highest percentage of overlapping audiences also belongs to the leader — pokimane. For example, 63% of fuslie’s viewers watched pokimane’s streams between January and March 2021. Jinnytty has the lowest crossover rates, with 5.8% to 11% of other streamers' viewers watching her streams. Note that 31% of Jinnytty's audience also watched Amouranth's broadcasts.

In early 2021, viewers showed an increased interest in live streaming, and overall Twitch metrics continued to grow from quarter to quarter — Hours Watched in the first quarter of 2021 almost doubled compared to the same period in 2020 and increased by 800M compared to the fourth quarter of last year.

The English language remains one of the most popular among the platform’s viewers — this is especially visible in terms of the growth of the top 100 streamers’ metrics. Even though content makers are spending less time on stream, Hours Watched and Peak Viewers are only increasing. The biggest peak in Q1 2021 was achieved by British streamer tommyinnit, who reached 650K spectators at one point in time on January 20th. This is the seventh highest number of Peak Viewers in Twitch history.

The pandemic outbreak caused streaming to grow by almost doubled comparing Q1 2020 vs. Q1 2021. It might be the perfect timing now to raise money via streaming where charity fundraising isn’t an exception.
