Anime Awards by Crunchyroll celebrated its 5th anniversary last weekend; the event summed up the results of last year in a huge and diverse world of anime. The ceremony was held on Twitch, viewers got to know the winners in 18 nominations, and Streams Charts summarized the results of the event's viewership statistics.
What are Anime Awards?
Anime Awards are annual awards run by Crunchyroll, a streaming service that specializes in distributing anime (Japanese animation), manga (Japanese comics), and drama (Japanese TV series). Award ceremonies have been held since 2017.
The nominees for the award are determined by a specially selected jury, which includes dozens of people from all over the world. These are the most respected representatives of the anime community. For example, the panel of judges included journalists, podcast authors, cosplayers, youtubers, bloggers and other influencers in 2021.
Winners are determined by voting. 70% of the votes are the opinion of the jury, and the remaining 30% are the opinion of the viewers who vote for a certain period of time (usually a week).
Award categories change from time to time depending on audience feedback, but the key ones remain the same. In particular, these include Anime of the Year, Best Opening Sequence, Best Protagonist, Best Antagonist, Best Drama, Best Comedy, etc.
In 2021, the ceremony was held online due to the coronavirus pandemic. But this is not always the case; for example, the awards were held at the Ricardo Montalbán Theatre in the Hollywood part of Los Angeles in 2018.
In addition to the awards, various announcements are also usually held at the ceremony. Crunchyroll usually presents new animes that will soon appear on the streaming service. For example, the company announced “Tokyo Revengers” and “While Killing Slimes for 300 Years, I Became the MAX Level Unknowingly” during the 2021 ceremony.
