Baller League leveraging co-streaming to boost interest in UK expansion

Baller League leveraging co-streaming to boost interest in UK expansion
Share:

The inaugural season of the Baller League's United Kingdom edition kicked off at the end of March. One of the top media football leagues in the world today, it will give football fans  a chance to witness their favourite influencers and footballers mix it up on and off the field till the first week of June.

While the maiden season of this hybrid football tournament might not immediately catch the attention of online users when it comes to viewership numbers, the way the live broadcasting ecosystem has been set up is distinctive. Content creators and influencers have free rein as to how they want to cover the action, with the organisers creating dedicated streaming booths for them to run on-site broadcasts.

There are also interviews and expert analyses done pitchside, bringing on-camera the players and celebrity streamers before and after matches to get their thoughts and opinions on the games. As a result, fans who want to catch the action alongside their favourite creators can do so in a setting either as part of watchalongs or by catching the numerous on-site shows, making the Baller League UK an attractive proposition.

The United Kingdom leg was birthed after two relatively successful seasons of the Germany-based Baller League, created by entrepreneur Felix Starck alongside former national team players Mats Hummels and Lukas Podolski. In November 2024, the competition's officials expanded its operations to America and Britain, with famous YouTubers Darren IShowSpeed Watkins Jr and JJ "KSI" Olatunji roped in as the presidents of the two circuits, respectively.

The British circuit was the first to begin, with current and former football stars coming together with famous content creators to manage teams and cover other roles. The involvement of ex-players from the homeland includes luminaries like Gary Lineker, Alan Shearer, Ian Wright, and Micah Richards, and the foreign cast is equally stellar, boasting names like Luis Figo, Robert Pires, Jens Lehmann, and Freddie Ljungberg.

The circuit even bagged a mainstream broadcasting deal with Sky. This is a massive move, proving just how valuable such media leagues have become from a viewership and commerce viewpoint. What makes this football league mainstream friendly are its unconventional rules: six-a-side, which is based on German public footballing culture.

Moreover, each half lasts just 15 minutes, meaning they tend to pack more action. There are also MLS-style one-on-one penalties and other exciting changes to the football formula, like long-range goals counting as double and goalkeepers not being allowed to use their hands.

Of course, the presence of faces that can sell the product is also key, and that is where the above celebrity football stars and streaming sensations come into play. Someone like a KSI, with his legions of fans and history of successful business ventures, is bound to give the Baller League UK a more international status, not unlike the highly successful Kings League franchise, the brainchild of Spanish Twitch sensation Ibai "ibai" Llanos and former national team defender Gerard Pique.

Football itself has slowly become the sport to livestream on platforms like Twitch and Kick, with these events — be they influencer-led or strictly competitive — attracting millions of viewers. Recent examples of successful competitions that have attractive massive audience numbers are the various Kings League competitions and the 2024 ASEAN Championship, which created all kinds of records and reiterated the fact that the beautiful game's global popularity can be parlayed successfully into the content creation business.

Getting back to the Baller League, its inaugural UK iteration has seen the involvement of many top football creators. While the official channels continue to provide the cutting-edge telecast that fans have come to associate with sports broadcasting, the co-casters offer something different. They deliver more intimate and personal experiences to their viewers, including to those who perhaps do not understand the game as well but want to be part of the action as long as their favourite creators are covering the matches.

The most popular co-casting star during the first match day was KSI, who held a watchalong of the matches of his Sidemen peers' teams. He was also on hand to share commentary duties during the second gameday, although fans were not too pleased with his mic talents.

Tobi "TBJZL" Brown's VZN FC lost 3:6 to Deportrio, a team owned by Alan Shearer, Micah Richards, and Gary Lineker. Meanwhile, Simon "Miniminter" Minter's M7 FC edged a cliffhanger against Wembley Rangers AFC, managed by England women's international Chloe Kelly and legendary Arsenal forward Ian Wright, 3:2.

We have even seen the famous (or infamous) Manchester United superfan Mark Goldbridge hosting livestreams and watchalongs from the arena itself. He has also conducted interviews with various team managers and helped fans get an insight into how the league works and how the players and coaches, many of whom do not have top-tier professional football experience, come together to come up with the best tactics and strategies for each game.

When briefly looking at the Baller League UK's viewership statistics so far, the event's various livestreams have done approximately 990,629 Hours Watched (HW) and 115,868 Peak Viewers (PV). The most popular streamers to cover the two matchdays were KSI and Mark Goldbridge, two names whose content differs a lot but whose love for the game is well-known among followers of the game.

The official Baller League UK channel also ended among the ten most watched channels across platforms between March 24 and April 1. That means it has outperformed the second season of The Icon League, another Germany-based media football league run by former midfielder Toni Kroos and the popular EA FC streamer, Elias "eliasn97" Nerlich.

It is not just watchalongs and co-streams that are setting the inaugural season of this six-a-side football tournament apart. YouTuber Amin "Chunkz" Mohamed is hosting a weekly show that involves celebrities and other footballing stars, past and present, as guests. The second gameday witnessed Tottenham Hotspur defender Kevin Danso act as a pitchside co-commentator.

Chunkz may not be live broadcasting these episodes to his millions of followers, but his mere presence is enough to bring in so many more eyeballs to a product that feels fresh and more appealing to many younger football fans in the country. Viewers have already witnessed the likes of former Ballon d'Or winner Luis Figo, TV presenter and DJ Maya Jama, and rapper Dave, all team managers, with more appearances likely from more such celebrities.

In essence, the Baller League UK is seemingly encouraging a model where content creators on any live broadcasting service can co-cast the action. After two gamedays, it seems to be working, for the competition is gaining traction within the traditionally conservative British media as well as across social media and online news outlets.

And let's be honest, this quick spreading of the word is what the organisers would have wanted in the first place. It doesn't matter that the participating squads have been assembled using former English Premier League players, free agents, futsal athletes, and released academy footballers, the aim is to attract as many viewers as possible, even if the action is not exactly the most eye-catching or technically sound.

Using all the celebrity and internet tools at its disposal is a clever move by the Baller League organisers. It amplifies the event across online forums thanks to the creator-heavy broadcasting model that has the potential to attract even casual football fans who are regular on social media.

As a result, many in the conventional British media outlets are — albeit begrudgingly — calling this media league, or at least the concept, the future of the beautiful game. Crucially, the reaction from football fans in Britain has so far been of intrigue and open-mindedness.

It helps that traditional football clubs have for long taken their fans for granted, with recent price hikes in ticket costs and the level of hospitality not what it used to be. As a result, fans have become increasingly disillusioned with the matchday experience, and if a suitable alternative comes along, many could very well jump ship.

This is where the Baller League UK will look to play its hand well. If, like the Kings League, it can continue to evolve and add fresh, spicy elements to its gameplay and use social media/influencers to spread positive word of mouth, it could become a viable second option to traditional football on these islands.
