How popular was Charles III's coronation on Twitch compared to other newsbreaks?

How popular was Charles III's coronation on Twitch compared to other newsbreaks?
Share:

The coronation of Charles III, Prince of Wales, took place in London on May 6. Charles has officially become the king of the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth. This event obviously attracted the attention of people around the world, as the last time a similar ceremony was held was in 1953 when Queen Elizabeth II ascended to the throne. The coronation was discussed by all the major media outlets of the world, and it was also mentioned on Twitch streamer channels.

In April, the number of mentions of the word "coronation" in Twitch chats ranged between a few hundred messages, but closer to the date of the ceremony, the number of such mentions multiplied. For example, on May 1, about 350 messages on Twitch were written about the coronation, while on May 6-8 (the day of the ceremony and two days after it), the number of such mentions reached 4.3K.

The number of mentions of the 'coronation' word on Twitch

The coronation of Charles III was discussed by many streamers around the world. Among UK content creators, the most active discussions of the ceremony were on the Zoil and Tubbo channels, where we counted more than 600 messages about the coronation in three days. As for streamers from other countries, the coronation was discussed on xQc, mattp1tommy, Geestargames, NerdCubed, moistcr1tikal, Quin69, Jinnytty and other channels of content creators.

In total, the coronation was mentioned on 378 British Twitch channels from May 6 to 8, a total of more than 10.4K messages on the topic were sent. As for viewers from around the world, more than 117K people on 23.3K different channels sent messages about the ceremony during the same period.

Between May 6 and 8, the number of mentions of the words "king" and "queen" in the chats on Twitch was 160.2K and 63.5K messages, respectively. At the same time, the words "Charles" and "King Charles" had 13.1K and 2.2K mentions.

On the example of the dynamics of the word "coronation", we showed how interest in the ceremony was changing — this word has a very clear context and it is hard to attribute it to another event by accident. We have also analyzed the dynamics of the word "king" as an example (in the chart below) and we found that Twitch viewers have had many other newsworthy events related to the word over the past month, and Charles' coronation was not the most popular of them.

Mention Dynamics of the 'king' Word on Twitch

In the first half of April, the word "king" was written most frequently in Mizkif's chat — more than 22.4K mentions during the selected period. Not only viewers were jokingly calling Mizkif a king or used this word to react to the content he was broadcasting, but also Mizkif is a part of One True King organization. The word "king" in praise of the streamer is also common on other channels. For example, on the channels of xQc, Gorgc, Forsen, Kai Cenat, etc.

A similar situation is true for KingGM95, whose channel got more than 8K mentions of the word "king" in a week. In this case, the viewers used this word as a reference to the streamer himself, because "king" is part of his nickname.

The big driver for the popularity of the word "king" was the launch of the second season of the Kings League, a popular Spanish media-football league by top streamers. Just in the first half of April (the 3rd, 4th, 10th, 16th and 17th), the official channel of the league held several broadcasts with the player draft, the announcement of the Queens League (a women's division), and so on. The number of viewers on these broadcasts amounted to several hundred thousand people.

The popularity of the word "king" on Twitch may have been influenced by other events completely unrelated to the coronation of Charles III. For example, on April 16, in the first round of the NBA playoffs this season, Sacramento Kings and Golden State Warriors played their first game. The Sacramento team won the game by a landslide, and the very next day, the number of mentions of the word "king" rose from 56K to 70K messages. This is the highest number since the beginning of April.

Another example is some of the loud statements by writer Stephen King about the new Twitter account verification system. He has already argued about it many times with Elon Musk, and on April 20, his next post on the topic got more than 50 million views and was quoted by various media outlets.

Finally, the dynamics of references to the word "king" were naturally influenced by the national holiday King's Day, which is celebrated annually in the Netherlands at the end of April. This year it was celebrated on April 27.

The dynamics of mentions of the king in the chats on Twitch showed the same growth as the dynamics of mentions of the coronation — in other words, the connection with the ceremony here is unquestionable. However, over a longer distance, it is hard to say with certainty that specific peaks in mentions of "king" are related to the coronation. However, some of the big events and top streamers cause great inaccuracy in the references here.
