The late-February 2026 strikes by Israel and the United States on Iran set off a global media firestorm, and livestreaming platforms were swept up in it almost immediately. As the situation escalated, viewers flocked to Twitch and YouTube to follow the developments in real time, driving massive engagement and turning live chats into fast-moving hubs of discussion about the growing Middle East crisis.
YouTube’s News & Politics category surges
The heightened interest in the Middle East conflict is also evident on YouTube, particularly in the News & Politics category. Before the bombings began, this category slightly trailed Entertainment in total watch hours. However, when it comes to average and peak concurrent viewers, both categories show nearly identical numbers.

When the bombings began, the landscape shifted dramatically. Interest swung heavily toward the News & Politics category. Between February 28 and March 5, average viewership in News & Politics rose 58%, surpassing 2 million viewers. In comparison, Entertainment averaged around 1.4 million viewers during the same period.
In fact, the News & Politics category now outpaces all other sections across streaming platforms. It not only generates more watch hours but also maintains a higher average concurrent viewership than TikTok Live’s Charts section.
HasanAbi and Twitch: Political commentary sparks viewership growth
After Israel and the United States launched strikes on Iran in late February 2026, the global news cycle intensified, and the Twitch community quickly began engaging with the topic as well. The surge in interest surrounding the conflict is clearly reflected in the statistics of Hasan “HasanAbi“ Piker, a popular American streamer widely regarded as one of the platform’s leading political commentators.

HasanAbi streams almost every day, and February 28 was no exception. One of the main topics of that broadcast was the attack carried out by Israel and the United States on Iran. Based on the stream’s viewership statistics, the discussion sparked a strong reaction from the platform’s audience.
Viewership on HasanAbi’s channel surged sharply amid the armed conflict. Compared with February 27, the stream’s average viewership jumped 68%, reaching a peak of 49.2K viewers. This marks the second-highest result for the channel in 2026.
The only broadcast with slightly higher average viewership occurred in January, when ICE immigration officers shot a man in Minnesota during a controversial operation that sparked nationwide attention and protests.
Nearly a week into the Middle East conflict, interest in the topic on HasanAbi’s channel remains strong. Before the events, his streams typically drew around 30–35K viewers, but after February 28, that number jumped significantly. Peak viewership also surged, reaching over 60K on the first day of the conflict and remaining consistently high in the following days.
Middle East conflict sparks 1,000% surge in streaming chat discussions
The Middle East conflict sparked a surge of discussion on streaming platforms. On a typical day, the word “Iran” appeared around 330–550 times in Twitch chats. On the day the strikes began, mentions jumped to 3.7K messages. YouTube chat activity showed a similar spike, with mentions increasing nearly tenfold.
From February 26 to March 4, “Iran” was mentioned over 21.5K times, with the vast majority occurring after the military operation began.

Keywords mentions in chats: "Iran", "War", "WW3"
Mentions of “War” and “WW3” also spiked on February 28. Tracking WW3 provides a clearer link to the Middle East events, as viewers referred to the conflict as the potential start of World War 3.
This example highlights how Twitch has grown beyond gaming to become a platform where viewers actively engage with current events and global issues. As seen with HasanAbi’s channel, timely news and political commentary can drive massive audience interest, proving that Twitch is now a key space for both entertainment and informed discussion.
