Reddit confirms return of r/place, one of the biggest internet events

Reddit confirms return of r/place, one of the biggest internet events
Share:

Reddit’s r/place, which became quite a hit among community members in 2017 and 2022, is back again, much to the delight of users. For those unaware, r/place is meant to be a collaborative digital canvas on which Redditors can place a pixel every few minutes, enabling them to work together and create art on a massive online cooperative canvas.

As per the website's moderators, r/place ‘was created to examine what happens if you only let individuals make a small contribution at a time so that they must work with others to build anything significant. What started as an April Fool’s experiment, quickly blossomed into millions of Redditors working together to place colored pixels on a communal canvas, eventually evolving into a digital art piece.’

This year, the space will come with a few community-focused features, which will help Redditors and moderators to remain organized amidst the creative chaos. As per Reddit, these elements include:

  • Moderators can pin coordinates on the canvas to their subreddit

  • Community flags (via pinning) visible to Redditors on mobile apps exploring the canvas, and enabling communities to claim their artwork

  • A community list on r/place for participating communities to get discovered

  • A picture-in-picture view for Redditors on our mobile apps so you can explore other parts of Reddit while placing pixels

Users can head to this segment of the popular forum by tapping on the ‘p’ icon atop their home feed.

Last year, 10.4 million users created a body of work over four days, placing 160 million total pixels. At its peak, 5.9 million pixels were placed per hour, with many great moments, including Rembrandt replicas, BTS creations, iconic French monuments, and streamer wars. It was the height of the online community gathering to create, cooperate, alter, and meme the world’s largest collaborative digital canvas.

Twitch Rivals x r/place

It didn’t take long for the world’s largest streaming platform to get in on the action that was the news about r/place’s re-emergence. On its website, there was a quick update about a collaboration — called r/place 2023 Live Pixel Canvas — that would run from July 21 to July 23 from 2:30 AM GMT+5:30.

This three-day event will feature multiple streamers from Twitch showcasing their community and the global r/place communities interacting in the r/place 2023 Live Pixel Canvas. The participants have not yet been confirmed, but for more details on how content creators can get in on the action and how users can follow their favorite influencers, they can head here.

There will also be celebrity guest hosts featured on the main Twitch Rivals hub broadcast. They can also earn the r/place 2023 Cake chat badge and gift subs to interesting communities and streamers streaming r/place on Twitch.

R/place, a special event that also brings the live-streaming party to Reddit

Last year, Reddit Place 2022 became one of the largest events in the history of the internet. Streamers and vloggers competed with each other by coordinating with fans on social media, with the participants including little-known creators and the biggies of the community like xQc, Ibai, Kamet0, and ZeratoR.

Moreover, French and Spanish content creators got into quite the face-off, with the likes of Kamet0 and ZeratoR leading the former against their peers from Europe, including Ibai, Rubius, and Auronplay. Kamet0 and Ibai especially got into it, with both fighting for the same part of the canvas and drawing the logos of their respective esports organizations — Karmine Corp and KOI.

All the top streamers of the purple platform covered the event, with some setting records on their channels. Among them were Kamet0, xQc, and the Turkish online star Elraenn. This year, with the content creation industry bigger than ever and thriving on multiple sites, new records could just be written, alongside new and old rivalries playing out before fans’ eyes.
