YouTube Live hits new record for viewers thanks to esports broadcasts

YouTube Live hits new record for viewers thanks to esports broadcasts

On October 27, YouTube Live hit a new platform high of 16.03M peak concurrent viewers, beating its previous mark set in April 2023. The new milestone was achieved on the back of two massive esports events, further reinforcing its growing importance in today's global livestreaming landscape.

The day in question witnessed two massive games across titles in the form of League of Legends and Mobile Legends: Bang Bang. While the former's biggest competition, the 2024 World Championship, is ongoing, the latter's highest-profile regional league, MPL Indonesia, saw its most recent end on October 27.

The 2024 LoL World Championship saw its Semifinal match-ups take place on the October 26 and 27 weekend. The second of these matches, between regional rivals T1 and Gen.G, made history by becoming the most popular last-four clash in series history. It was helped massively by viewers on YouTube, who helped the platform hit 2.45M PV, more than double the figure from the other Semifinals between Bilibili Gaming and Weibo Gaming.

The MPL Indonesia Season 14 also reached a slew of milestones, including entering the top 10 most-watched esports events list. Fans saw the return of the game's most popular side, RRQ Hoshi, to the Grand Final after two years, helping attract a scarcely believable 4 million concurrent viewers.

The MLBB Professional League competition also reached 117.36M Hours Watched, another series record and one of the highest at any esports event ever. Excluding the above-mentioned League of Legends World Championship series, the MPL ID Season 14 became the most-watched esports event ever. The live stream of the summit clash between RRQ Hoshi and Team Liquid Aura also ended as the official MPL Indonesia YouTube channel's most popular one ever.

On October 27, three official channels covering MLBB and LoL esports made the ten most popular live streams table. Apart from them, there were also two official sports channels, with the first belonging to the Asian Cricket Council that covered the Men’s T20 Emerging Teams Asian Cup final between Sri Lanka and Afghanistan. The second was a channel from Nepal that covered the SAFF Women's Championship 2024 Semi-Final between Nepal and India.

There was also the channel of Bispo Bruno Leonardo, the highly sought-after spiritual leader in Brazil who is no newcomer to YouTube's top ten leaderboards. Accompanying him were an entertainment channel from The Philippines and a news channel from India.

Interestingly, YouTube Live was not the only livestreaming service to touch a new peak on October 27. CHZZK, recently launched by Naver, also hit a platform peak concurrent viewers milestone, touching 325.1K PV, only the second time it had passed the 300K PV mark after May 2024.
