The 97th Academy Awards took place on the night of March 2nd to 3rd in California at the iconic Dolby Theatre, where the best films and talents of 2024 were celebrated with golden statuettes. This prestigious event was widely covered across media outlets, social media platforms, and livestreaming services like Twitch and YouTube.
The biggest winner of the night was the comedy-drama Anora, directed by Sean Baker, which took home five Oscars, including the coveted Best Picture of the Year. Notably, the other four awards essentially went to Baker himself, as he served as the director, writer, producer, and editor of the film.
Coming in second for the most awards was The Brutalist by Brady Corbet, which earned three Oscars from ten nominations. Emilia Pérez, Wicked, and Dune: Part Two each won two awards.

The official broadcast of the 97th Academy Awards took place on the ABC TV channel, but many other media companies provided livestreaming coverage of the pre-event activities, for example, interviews with stars on the red carpet and commentary from film experts. To avoid violating television rights, many YouTube and Twitch streamers hosted radio-style broadcasts, sharing their impressions and emotions with their viewers during the show.
In total, 1,973 unique channels covered the 97th Oscars, generating over 2,300,000 Hours Watched. The peak online viewership reached 533,628 viewers, which occurred at the end of the event (3 AM GMT). For comparison, this is nearly 100,000 more than the 67th Grammy Awards.
Interestingly, the majority of channels covering the ceremony were from Brazil — 73%. This significant increase in regional activity is primarily due to the victory of the Brazilian film Ainda Estou Aqui, which won the award for Best Foreign Language Film.

The most popular channel covering the Oscars was the Associated Press’s YouTube channel, which reached a peak of 82,331 concurrent viewers, recorded during the red carpet arrivals of the movie stars. The only Twitch streamer in the top 10 was Brazilian streamer Rafael Lange ‘’Cellbit’’ Severino.
In terms of the ceremony’s popularity, this year’s Oscars saw far more discussion than in previous years. The number of mentions in Twitch chats rose from 3,200 to 4,100 messages per hour. However, the 2023 record wasn’t broken: during the opening ceremony of that year, mentions peaked at 4,226 messages per hour. By comparison, mentions of the BAFTA Awards in recent years have never topped 1,000 messages during the ceremony.
