Black Desert is a Korean MMORPG that is popular not only in Asia but also in other regions thanks to distribution through well-known platforms, including Steam. On December 11, the game's developers held the annual conference CalpheON Ball, where they talked about the plans to update the title and get feedback from the players.
At the conference, the developers announced a new game location "Mountains of Eternal Winter". Even the first level characters can enter it. The developers also added new dungeons and inventory items. Relics are a new type of items that can be strengthened with special stones and thus players can experiment with their characters' builds.
The developers not only answered the previously prepared questions but also interacted with the players in a live broadcast. There was an art festival at the end of the broadcast. Players sent their works in advance in three categories — "Illustrations", "Video / Music" and "Freestyle" (cosplay, merch, figurines, etc.). The developers chose four works from each category and the viewers voted for winners live on air. The 1st-4th place winners got an iPad Pro, monitors, Bluetooth speakers and sets of exclusive merchandise.
Black Desert PC x Console: CalpheON Ball
The conference was broadcast both on Twitch and YouTube, and the vast majority of viewers followed the event on the former platform. It generated 84% of the Hours Watched. The official English-language channel /blackdesertgame was the most popular at the broadcast.
CalpheON's broadcast was not only in English (although it was in the lead with 48% of total Hours Watched). Korean streamers were in second place — they generated 17% of the Hours Watched. There were also broadcasts in Russian, Chinese, Japanese, Turkish, Thai and Portuguese.
The conference attracted 71K Peak Viewers. On the whole, this is not a bad result for the discipline, but no new record was set. We analyzed Black Desert's statistics on Twitch: so far the game has gathered the largest number of people at the broadcast on June 19, 2021 — 83K Peak Viewers. At that time, there was a "2021 Black Desert Heidel Ball" event in the MMORPG and it set a category record.
Despite the platform, Black Desert Mobile has top-notch graphics
Although Black Desert is an MMORPG of Korean origin, it has fans all over the world. There are several factors: localization, support, and content production for a multilingual audience, as well as a console version of the game. It should be noted that not many games of this genre have multiple versions for different devices. In addition, we have Black Desert Mobile, one of the first MMOs for mobile devices which was launched in 2018.
The MMORPG genre is expanding on handheld platforms: there are mobile versions of famous titles such as Perfect World, Lineage 2M, Jade Dynasty Reborn, and Blade & Soul II. A peak of the genre may be ahead — popular PC franchises have already announced new projects for mobile platforms. Among them are Aion 2, Diablo Immortal and The Ragnarok.
