On December 5, Fortnite hosted the final event of Chapter 2, “The End,” which marked the start of Chapter 3, called “Flipped”. The update not only brought a ton of content to the game but also attracted a huge number of viewers to streaming platforms. The event turned out to be one of the largest in terms of the audience on Twitch.
What's new in Fortnite Chapter 3?
- New game engine. Fortnite is now powered by Unreal Engine 5.
- The map has been updated. The landscape was changed, and the weather conditions have changed, with weather effects being added.
- New weapons and equipment. Teamwork-related actions were also added: if several people resurrect an ally at the same time, the resurrection process shall accelerate according to the number of people.
- Battle pass and Marvel characters. With the new season, it will be possible to get seven new characters, as well as Spider-Man items.
- Capture the Victory Crown. If you win a match, a crown will appear over your head next time, making you more noticeable to the other players.
- Quests. The quest system was changed; now they appear in a dedicated menu. Also season quests are now available in addition to daily ones.
- Party worlds. Epic Games also introduced places to hang out with friends and play mini-games.
How did the launch of Fortnite Chapter 3 affect viewership?
On December 3 (the day before the final of Chapter 2), the game occupied the 10th spot in the Twitch ranking. On December 4, “The End” in-game event took place, and Fortnite climbed to the third spot. Its Hours Watched quadrupled (reaching 3.6M) and it also gathered 1.3M Peak Viewers.
The update attracted the attention of a huge number of content creators: if on December 3 the Fortnite category peaked at 7K simultaneously streaming channels, then on December 4, this indicator increased 13 times, reaching 89K. The most popular streamer of the category that day was the Spanish content creator TheGrefg, who has gathered 379K Peak Viewers.
On December 5, the game climbed to the second spot of the most-watched categories of the day on Twitch. The Hours Watched indicator grew to 6.8M, but the Peak Viewers indicator fell short of 1M, only reaching a total of 895K Viewers. On this day, most viewers were gathered by the American streamer SypherPK: 224K Peak Viewers.
Fast forward a couple of days after the update and we see that the Fortnite hype didn't subside much. On December 7, the game was still ranked #4 in the most-watched categories of the day on Twitch. The Hours Watched and Peak Viewers indicators reached 3.2M and 284K, respectively – allowing the game to stay in the top. On December 8, the game dropped to 6th position and collected 2.3 million Hours Watched.
The scale of the event and the huge attention from streamers helped Fortnite to reach the top spots on Twitch. Fortnite’s “The End” even managed to overtake the virtual concert of Ariana Grande, gathering twice as many viewers. At the same time, “The End” and the beginning of Chapter 3 of the game fell short of becoming the game’s most popular events. Such a title still belongs to “The Device” event dated June 15, 2020. At that time, the Fortnite streams were watched by 2.2M Peak Viewers.
