One of the main gaming events of the year, The Game Awards 2021, took place at the Microsoft Theater on the night of December 10 in Los Angeles. The co-op action game It Takes Two won the main prize. In our new article we will tell you about the other winners and show how many people watched the event on streaming platforms.
What’s special about The Game Awards 2021
Besides the awards ceremony, The Game Awards have always been renowned for big announcements and notable guests. This year, Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss attended the awards as part of the promotional campaign for the new The Matrix. “Shang Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings” star Simu Liu and former Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime attended the event as well. The ceremony also featured musical performances by Imagine Dragons and the legendary Sting.
Game and film announcements are a traditional part of The Game Awards. This time Alan Wake 2, Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 and Star Wars: Eclipse, as well as other games, were announced. The event also showed the debut trailers of Sonic 2 film, Paramount's Halo series and much, much more!
The announcement of Alan Wake 2 was one of the most buzzing at The Game Awards — some details of the new game were also revealed by Remedy creative director Sam Lake
It Takes Two and Forza Horizon 5 won the most awards. The former not only won the title of Game of the Year, but was also voted Best Multiplayer Game and Family Game. The racing simulator won in the Best Audio Design and Best Sports Racing Game categories, as well as winning the Innovation in Accessibility Award.
The Awards also highlighted Riot Games' successes: League of Legends was voted the Best Esports Game of the year, and Worlds 2021 was voted the Best Esports Event of the year. Two awards also went to Natus Vincere — it was chosen as the Best Esports Team of the year, and its CS:GO squad member Alexander s1mple Kostylev became the Best Player of the year. Dream received the title of the Best Content Creator of the year. You can find all the winners of the Award here.
The Game Awards 2021 viewership statistics
The event was broadcast on all the main streaming platforms — Twitch, YouTube and Facebook. The award was on air for three and a half hours, and during that time it generated more than 6.7 million Hours Watched.
The event had more than 1.9 million Average Viewers, and at the peak of the broadcast up to 2.1 million people watched it concurrently — that's more than the PlayStation Showcase 2021 event attracted. It should be noted that the viewership of TGA 2021 slightly decreased in comparison with the previous year: the 2020 ceremony had 3.1 million Peak Viewers.
The Game Awards 2021 was broadcast on 400+ channels. In addition to the official streams by the organisers, the event was also covered by popular content creators, including Gaules, Tubbo, ibai, HasanAbi, sodapoppin, Rubius and others. The leader in terms of viewership became xQc with 138.3K Peak Viewers.
The Game Awards 2021's overall statistics were slightly lower than last year's ceremony, but there was still a great deal of excitement around the show. It's worth noting that this year the total number of broadcast channels dropped by almost three times, but the main metrics sagged much less sharply.
The Game Awards ranked fourth among 2021 gaming showcases broadcast on streaming platforms regarding Peak Viewers. The Awards managed to outpace one of the PlayStation showcases, and only two events from Nintendo and a presentation held by Xbox and Bethesda are ranked higher.
