Summer is typically packed with major gaming expos and showcases, and yesterday, it was Sony PlayStation’s turn with a brand-new State of Play. These events always draw big crowds, and this one was no different. In fact, it was the most popular State of Play ever, peaking at over 2.2 million live viewers for the first time in the series’ history.
At the June 4 showcase, Sony and its partner studios unveiled a lineup of exciting new titles and updates, from release dates to fresh trailers for previously announced games. One of the highlights was the latest trailer for Pragmata, now officially set for a 2026 release.
Another major reveal that got fans buzzing was 007: First Light, a brand-new James Bond game coming next year. It’s set to launch on multiple platforms, including the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2, with a full gameplay showcase planned for a future event. Also turning heads was Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls, a new fighting game from the developers behind Guilty Gear, also arriving in 2026.
The showcase was packed with even more major reveals. Highlights included the world premiere of Nioh 3, a new trailer for the upcoming Silent Hill f, the announcement of Sword of the Sea from the team behind Journey, plus much more. It’s clear fans were eagerly awaiting this edition of State of Play, and the record-setting livestream numbers made that excitement crystal clear.
Over 1,000 influencers and media outlets took part in the live coverage of June’s State of Play, collectively generating the majority of the event’s total viewership. The record-breaking peak of 2.25 million live viewers (along with an average of 1.91 million) was very much a shared achievement, driven heavily by creator broadcasts. While the official PlayStation stream led in total viewers, influencer channels saw strong and more evenly spread engagement across the board.
With this new record under its belt, State of Play now ranks as the third most popular gaming or tech showcase of 2025 by peak concurrent viewership. Only two Nintendo Direct presentations pulled in bigger numbers, and the one that revealed the Nintendo Switch 2 is still miles ahead, setting a benchmark that may prove tough to beat this year.
2025 is shaping up to be a standout year for the State of Play series. The first record-breaking moment of the year came in February, when that showcase became the first in the series to surpass 2 million live viewers. The summer edition has now raised the bar even higher, becoming the eighth State of Play event to have drawn over one million live viewers.
