Twitch streamers spend 8 hours literally searching for a needle in a haystack — And thousands watched

In an era of high-production content, Twitch creators Eric “Erobb” Lamont Robbins Jr. and Emily "ExtraEmily" Xuechun Zhang went back to basics, diving into the Bronze Age. Turning one of history’s most famous warnings into a literal challenge, they spent hours hunting for a physical needle in a massive pile of hay, an ordeal that drew an average of 12,000 live viewers, proving that the internet will tune in to almost anything if the participants fully commit to the bit.

How did Erobb and ExtraEmily's needle search stream work?

The search took place under gruelling conditions for a Just Chatting stream. Erobb and Emily worked in a backyard in 84°F (28°C) heat. When the sun went down, the search continued by the light of headlamps. To keep the audience invested in the slow-motion spectacle, the streamers implemented a "punishment wheel" that triggered every 10 new subscriptions, forcing them to perform humorous tasks while sifting through the dust.

While the feat was impressive, it didn't break the world record for metaphorical commitment. In 2014, Italian artist Sven Sachsalber spent 48 hours searching through a haystack in a performance hosted at a Paris museum. However, Erobb and ExtraEmily successfully modernized the concept, proving that in 2026, the internet is perfectly happy to watch eight hours of grass moving as long as there is a "punishment wheel" involved.

What engagement metrics did the needle in haystack stream achieve?

The engagement metrics for the stream indicate a high level of audience commitment to the absurd premise. At its highest point, the broadcast reached 15,555 concurrent viewers who watched the duo sift through the debris. This attention translated into significant financial support, including 845 new subscriptions and over 30,000 bits. Viewers remained engaged until the eighth hour when ExtraEmily eventually discovered the needle sitting on the ground among scattered hay near her feet.

Funnily enough, Erobb’s audience has a highly specific interest in his manual labor and struggle. He gained 294 new followers during the broadcast, marking his most successful day for channel growth since January 13, when he captivated the internet with another masterclass in inefficiency: attempting to saw through a wooden log using only a plastic knife.

As of March 26, 2026, Erobb and ExtraEmily are among the top 100 most-watched Twitch streamers in the United States, with Emily ranking in the top 10 among female creators — proof that their quirky, offbeat content keeps audiences hooked.
