Twitch Subgifts: males vs. females

Twitch Subgifts: males vs. females
Share:

There is an opinion that females receive gifts more often than males. Streams Charts has decided to check this assumption taking the Twitch streamer community as an example and find out who gets more gifted subscriptions on average. We present the results of our study.

Streams Charts calculations are not verified by the Twitch streamers themselves. We use our own methodology and the numbers may not coincide with the original values. Our calculations usually do not take into account subscriptions when the channel is offline, and we do not track auto-renewed subscriptions unless the viewer clicks the appropriate button in chat to notify the streamer about his auto-renewal.

We have analyzed 1500 male and 1500 female channels from Twitch's Top by Hours Watched. The total number of Subgifts for male streamers was 6.15 million, whereas for female streamers it was 3.36 million. We also found out that more than 62% of all Subgifts accounted for English speaking streamers, and 9-10% — for German-speaking creators.

According to the average number of Subgifts per creator, male creators get 83% more subscriptions on average than female ones, but that's not entirely correct. We should also consider the fact that male channels accumulate almost 90% of the total Hours Watched of the streamers we analyzed. And the more popular the creator, the more paid subscriptions he has, including Subgifts.

In order to estimate the correlation between the number of Subgifts and the streamer's gender more objectively, we calculated a weighted average, based on creator's Hours Watched as weights. As a result, we succeeded to even out the anomalous influence of top streamers. According to the main research question, we found that female streamers receive just under 55% of the Weighted Average number of subgifts, which means they get about 22% more subgifts than males in absolute numbers.

Top-10 Streamers By gifted subs

The top 10 streamers with the most Subgifts included 5 females, 4 males, as well as the HisandHersLive channel with male and a female broadcasts.

The Twitch leader by Subgifts at the time of publication is iiTzTimmy. He almost doubled the lead over his closest pursuer, Yvraldis, who became the leader among the females. PointCrow is in the top 3 for this metric.

Please note that there are many streamers in the Top by Subgifts that are not the most popular ones on the platform. The main reason for this is subathons: events where broadcasts last as long as people subscribe to the channels. The easiest way to prolong a broadcast is to gift a subscription to someone, and viewers usually buy multiple Subgifts per broadcast.

The leader of Twitch for the total number of subscriptions, Gaules, ranked only 11th by the number of Subgifts. However, it should be said that the number of his paid subscriptions is several times higher than the number of Subgifts. The situation is completely opposite for representatives of the top 10 ranking.
