BAFTA 2023 results — how the award was covered on Twitch and YouTube

BAFTA 2023 results — how the award was covered on Twitch and YouTube
Share:

The 76th British Academy Film Awards, also known as the BAFTAs, was held in London on February 19. It honored the best feature-length films and documentaries that were screened at British cinemas in 2022. Streams Charts has calculated how the film awards ceremony was discussed on Twitch.

The BAFTA ceremony has been held annually since 1948. The special gold masks are awarded to winners in more than 20 categories, including Best Film, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, etc. The BAFTA ceremony is often referred to as the final rehearsal before the Oscars, as it takes place shortly before Hollywood's top film awards (in 2023, the Oscars will be held on March 12). In addition, both awards often have a similar list of nominees, and often BAFTA winners then become Oscar winners.

The German anti-war film "All Quiet on the Western Front" by Edward Berger won BAFTA in 2023. It had 14 nominations and won seven of them, including the awards for Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay. The black tragicomedy " The Banshees of Inisherin" and the musical biopic "Elvis" each won four awards.

Austin Butler, who played Elvis Presley in the movie of the same name, won Best Actor at BAFTA. Cate Blanchett won Best Actress for her role as a female lead in the drama "Tár". James Cameron's new "Avatar" also won the award — the film outpaced all the competitors in Best Special Visual Effects.

Award Coverage on Twitch

BAFTA has official channels on Twitch and YouTube, but the activity on them is low. The last broadcast on BAFTA on Twitch was in April 2022, when the BAFTA Games Awards 2022 was broadcast there. As for YouTube, only the BAFTA 2023 pre-show — the red carpet walk, photo shoots and interviews with the actors — was broadcast there. The show lasted a little over two hours. The broadcast had 3K Average Viewers and 4.8K Peak Viewers.

BAFTA was not broadcast on Twitch, but the ceremony was periodically discussed there in chats. Thus, during the week, the award was mentioned by viewers on 204 channels. Almost 760 messages with the word BAFTA were sent. The most frequent ones were on the channels of the gaming streamers jabroni_mike, carolinekwan, and limmy. They didn't even have special broadcasts dedicated to BAFTA.

From February 13 to 18, the number of messages with the word BAFTA on Twitch ranged from 40 to 80, and from February 19 to 20, this figure rose to 217 messages. Overall, we must say that the film award did not arouse much interest among viewers of streaming services. First of all, because it did not have an official broadcast.

Twitch audience often reacts to certain events in sports, movies, or show business. For example, we previously calculated the activity of chatters during the FIFA World Cup in Qatar, as well as the number of mentions of Super Bowl LVII finalists. Of course, such big sports tournaments were much more actively discussed on the streams than the results of the British film awards, but perhaps the upcoming Oscars can be a more significant competitor to them.
