Baller League inaugural season results

Baller League inaugural season results
Share:

The first season of Baller League, a German media football league featuring local football stars and popular content creators, concluded after 2.5 months of action. The event managed to generate over 7.7 million Hours Watched, surpassing the viewership of some big esports events like LFLRLCS Major, or Call of Duty League Major.

Streets United became the champions of the inaugural season. The team is managed by Lukas Podolski, a former striker for the German national team, and Alisha Lehmann, a forward for the Swiss women's national team. In the decisive match, Streets United defeated Calcio Berlin (Led by Nico Heymer & Christoph Kröger) with a score of 7:5.

The final of the Baller League attracted 207,000 German-speaking Peak Viewers. In addition to the official Twitch channel, matches were also broadcasted by ambassador streamers, who acted as mentors for the clubs. Among them, MontanaBlack88 and Trymacs garnered the largest audiences.

Baller League vs. Kings League

Baller League can be considered the follower of Kings League, another popular media football league that started in Spain in 2023. There are indeed many similarities between the two tournaments: both leagues feature 12 teams, led by former professional footballers and popular streamers. While the Kings League boasts ambassadors like Gerard Piqué, Iker Casillas, Sergio Agüero, TheGrefg, and ibai, the Baller League has ambassadors and mentors such as Lukas Podolski, Kevin Prince Boateng, Trymacs, MontanaBlack88, and TheRealKnossi.

Just like in Kings League, Baller League matches also employ unconventional rules — reduced numbers of players on the field, shorter halves, and unique options like one-on-one play, offsides waivers, and so on. Baller League organizers openly declare that modern football is becoming dull, and many viewers find it difficult to watch 90-minute battles on a vast field. In contrast, the Baller League offers more dynamic games with unconventional, sometimes silly, but fun rules.

Baller League and Kings League share a lot in common, but there are also differences between them. The main distinction is that the Spanish league is already actively expanding: they successfully host the women's Queens League, as well as the children's Prince Cup. Recently, the Kings League franchise launched in America, and soon it will see the first World Championship with representatives from several countries. Popular football stars like Ronaldinho and Andriy Shevchenko have already made cameo appearances in Kings League, and fans will see Francesco Totti, Falcao, Rio Ferdinand, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, and other world football stars in the future. As for the Baller League, it cannot boast such a lineup of star players yet. Moreover, the league is focused on the German football scene and German content creators. At least for now.

The first season of the Baller League was a success. Firstly, the organizers took into account the experience of the Kings League, so they were able to create a vibrant show with a lot of pre-match activities and crowds of fans in the stands. It is worth praising the league's technical aspect. This can be noticed by the large number of cameras on the field and the work of broadcast directors, who can show goal moments in slow motion from multiple angles. This is sometimes lacking in the Spanish league for now.

Baller League and Kings League Viewership Comparison

In terms of viewership statistics, Baller League fell short compared to both the first and current seasons of Kings League, but this was hardly a surprise to anyone. After all, Kings League started first and managed to capture all the hype. Moreover, the Spanish live-streaming segment of Twitch is itself far bigger than the German one. Kings League has much greater potential in terms of audience reach, at least because the Spanish language is international and spoken not only in Spain but also in half of the countries in Latin America. Another significant factor was that Kings League matches were covered not just on Twitch, but also on platforms like YouTube and TikTok. Looking at the distribution of viewership across streams, Spanish viewers preferred official channels, whereas the German league sometimes saw community casters taking the lead, especially in the first couple of weeks.

Not much is known about the upcoming Baller League event so far: it will begin in mid-July, and the list of participants will expand from 12 to 14 teams. So far, there has been no disclosure regarding potential changes to the season's format or the league's ambassador lineup.
