Kane wins, Mbappé and Messi leads chat: Ballon d’Or 2026 streaming recap
The 2026 Ballon d’Or ceremony took place in London on October 26, celebrating football’s standout achievements from the past season. DAZN carried the official broadcast, while thousands of channels and watch parties across livestreaming platforms drew millions of viewers.
Streams Charts analyzed how audiences on Twitch, YouTube and Kick followed the ceremony and which finalists sparked the most discussion.
Watch parties account for 88% of Hours Watched
According to Streams Charts, Ballon d’Or 2026 broadcasts generated more than 11.5 million Hours Watched and peaked at 4.66 million concurrent viewers. In total, more than 2,600 unique channels covered the event across Twitch, YouTube and Kick.
Watch parties accounted for the vast majority of viewing, contributing 88% of the event’s total Hours Watched. DAZN’s official YouTube channel represented around 11.2%. However, its YouTube coverage was limited to the pre-show, featuring interviews and red-carpet arrivals. The ceremony itself was not streamed on YouTube, with viewers directed to DAZN’s official website to watch it.

DAZN Football on YouTube was the most popular channel covering the event, peaking at more than 1.8 million concurrent viewers and setting a new record for the channel on the platform.
Interestingly, the ceremony’s overall peak of 4.66 million viewers came after DAZN Football’s broadcast had ended. Watch parties alone drew that audience when the winner of the main award was announced.
YouTube leads viewing, Spanish tops the language rankings
Spanish-language audiences showed the strongest interest in Ballon d’Or 2026. Spanish-language channels accounted for more than 16% of total Hours Watched, placing Spanish ahead of English. This comes as little surprise, given that several players representing Spain and La Liga were competing for the ceremony’s top awards.
Arabic-language broadcasts generated around 14% of total Hours Watched, highlighting the award’s reach beyond Europe’s language communities.

YouTube accounted for around 83.7% of the ceremony’s total Hours Watched. Twitch, however, led by the number of unique channels covering the event, with over 1,300, more than YouTube and Kick combined.
Among community broadcasters, Mario Alonso “DjMaRiiO” Gallardo stood out by streaming across multiple platforms simultaneously. His YouTube channel peaked at more than 507,000 viewers, making it his most popular broadcast of the year so far.
Messi leads overall mentions, Mbappé dominates ceremony-day chat
Debates over who deserved the Ballon d’Or dominated football channels in recent months. Kylian Mbappé and Lamine Yamal added fuel to the fire: widely seen as the leading contenders, both actively promoted their cases through media interviews.

Lionel Messi was the most discussed player among the top five in the 2026 Ballon d’Or rankings, receiving more than 1,05 millions mentions across Twitch, YouTube and Kick chats in September and October. He typically averaged around 11,000 mentions a day, but that figure surged to 95,100 over the 24-hour period spanning October 6–7, driven by his farewell match for Argentina.
Mbappé ranked second to Messi in average daily mentions but led on ceremony day with 266,300 mentions to Messi’s 258,700. His total was nearly 1.5 times Yamal’s and five times Kane’s.
Kane was the least discussed of the five finalists. He largely avoided an active publicity campaign and spoke only occasionally and modestly about his chances in media interviews. Across the two months, he received just 65,300 mentions in Twitch, YouTube and Kick chats, a modest total compared with his rivals. That did not stop him from winning the men’s award and becoming England’s first Ballon d’Or winner since Michael Owen (2001).
Viewers’ opinions on the Ballon d’Or 2026 finalists
Harry Kane received the warmest overall response among the five Ballon d’Or finalists. Among messages expressing an opinion, 34.4% were positive and just 8.7% negative. Lionel Messi attracted the highest share of positive comments, at 39.4%, but also considerably more criticism. Both received a clearly more favourable response than the other finalists.
The winner’s announcement changed the conversation. Before the reveal, predictions, polls and speculation dominated much of the discussion. Afterwards, viewers increasingly celebrated the winner, challenged the rankings or mocked the runners-up.

For Kane, victory brought both stronger support and a backlash. After the announcement, 44.1% of opinion messages were positive, while 17.4% were negative. Recurring criticisms included comparisons with Robert Lewandowski, who commenters argued had delivered stronger performances in the past without winning the award, alongside accusations of a “home award” and jokes about penalties. Nevertheless, Kane retained a strongly positive reception.
Kylian Mbappé’s second-place finish coincided with a pronounced shift against him: from 15.7% to 45.9% of opinion messages after the announcement were negative. Recurring themes included “balón de playa” jokes, “dictator” references and criticism of his trophy record. These reactions appeared particularly in Barcelona-leaning Spanish chats and French-language discussions.
Lamine Yamal’s reception also turned negative, with the share of negative opinion messages rising from 14.6% before the reveal to 37.1% afterwards. Mockery about “Yamal crying” appeared alongside messages arguing that he had been robbed. The result generated both ridicule and sympathy, but criticism grew more sharply than support.
Rodri faced the harshest response. After the rankings were announced, 61.4% of opinion messages about him were negative. Much of the criticism questioned his position ahead of Messi, Dembélé or Olise, while some revisited the controversy surrounding his previous Ballon d’Or victory. The backlash concerned the award rankings as much as Rodri himself.
Messi’s fifth place produced a different split. Supporters argued that he deserved a top-three finish, while critics questioned his inclusion. Despite that disagreement, his reception remained positive overall after the announcement.
