The Streams Charts team keeps experimenting with online streaming chat analytics. In our previous articles we found out which team was most supported at the IEM Cologne 2022 CS:GO Finals, and we also identified the most popular car brands among Twitch viewers. Now we have analyzed Comic-Con San Diego 2022 streams and are ready to name the most popular Marvel superheroes that viewers talked about most often during and after the event.
We should remind you that Comic-Con San Diego 2022 was held from July 21 to 24 at the San Diego Convention Center. It is usually rare for such offline festivals to arrange a live broadcast, but some companies do so. This time, Marvel fans were lucky enough to watch the presentation from the company live.
We analyzed not only Marvel's Twitch and YouTube channels for this article, but also the channels of independent streamers who attended the event and/or followed it online. We used a larger time frame for completeness and analyzed the broadcasts between July 21 and July 31, rather than July 21-24. The reason we did so is because many streamers only started actively discussing Comic-Con San Diego 2022 after it was over, when the studio had uploaded all the trailers and made all the announcements for the upcoming movies/series.
Channel Analytics
One of the most popular channels that covered Comic-Con San Diego 2022 is the official Marvel Entertainment channel on YouTube. During the event, there were four streams, which accumulated a total of more than 100K Hours Watched. The Average Viewers number was 9.1K people, and the Peak Viewers number reached 25K people.
The Marvel channel on Twitch had slightly lower numbers, reaching 43.7K Hours Watched and 9.7K Peak Viewers. We should note that the event was covered in English, as well as in Spanish (StripMarvelTV) and French (La chaîne du geek).
Most Popular Characters
During the period from July 21 to July 31, the leader by the number of mentions in the chat was Loki — the name of this character appeared in the chat more than 16.9K times (the peak was on July 24 — 1.9K messages). Such attention to the God of Deception character is not surprising, as Marvel announced the Loki series to be renewed for a second season at Comic-Con San Diego 2022, and named the approximate release time — the summer of 2023. Recall that it is one of Marvel's most successful series according to IMDb (8.2/10 rating).
In second place by the number of mentions are the Avengers — the team of superheroes was mentioned in chats more than 15K times. The peak of activity of the audience was at the announcement of the Marvel phase 5 and 6. At Comic-Con San Diego 2022, the studio announced the release of two new "Avengers" movies: "Avengers: Kang Dynasty" will be released on May 1, 2025, and "Avengers: Secret Wars" will hit the big screens the same year, but a few months later. This movie will also end the sixth phase and the entire multiverse arc.
Daredevil is the third most-talked-about Marvel character, as its name was mentioned 3.5K times on July 24. This is the maximum number of all the heroes who appeared at Comic-Con San Diego 2022. This activity is explained by the fact that Marvel has announced a reboot of the Daredevil series called "Daredevil: Born Again", with Charlie Cox and Vincent D'Onofrio back in the lead roles. The series is supposed to be part of Marvel's Phase 5, and is scheduled to be released in the spring of 2024. Charlie Cox's character is also expected to have a cameo in other Marvel projects.
As for the least popular newcomers to the cinematic universe that were introduced in San Diego, it is Ironheart, the superhero who followed Tony Stark’s and Iron Man’s footsteps. Viewers were also unimpressed by the announcement of the Secret Invasion series and the Thunderbirds movie.
While researching the chat, our analysts noticed an abnormal surge of attention to the Captain America character, which was recorded on July 31. As it turned out, on that day, streamer NickEh30 was running a 48-hour streaming marathon playing Fortnite and asking his audience what skin he should wear before the match, and many suggested that he should wear Captain America's one.
