Yesterday, exactly one year after their breakup, the French electronic music duo Daft Punk shared rare footage of one of their first live performances in the US and streamed it on Twitch. A couple of hours prior, they left ambiguous posts on their newly created social media accounts, sparking a passionate debate whether this means their comeback.
Who is Daft Punk?
Their greatest hits such as One More Time, Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger and Get Lucky have entered history as some of the most popular songs with multiple music awards and hundreds of millions of views on YouTube.
Widely regarded as some of the most influential artists in electronic dance music, Daft Punk achieved popularity in the late 1990s as a part of the French house movement. The group, consisting of French musicians Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter, was formed in 1993 in Paris and debuted in 1997 with the album Homework.
Combining elements of house music with funk, techno, disco, indie rock and pop, the French duo achieved great commercial success in years to come. In 2015, Rolling Stone ranked them the 12th greatest musical duo of all time.
However, in February 2021, 28 years after forming in Paris, the legendary duo announced its break up through the video titled Epilogue which featured a scene from their 2006 science fiction film Electroma.
Homework anniversary stream
The first anniversary of Daft Punk’s split brought hope back to many of their fans, as the duo released its new social media accounts on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook. In their cryptic reappearance, they shared an image of their logo and an old flier from Daftendirektour, the duo's first-ever concert tour which spanned from January to December 1997.
About three hours later, they posted a link to a stream on their Twitch channel, featuring rare footage of Daft Punk’s Daftendirektour concert played live at a Los Angeles nightclub without their iconic helmets. The one-time-only livestream was held to celebrate the 25th anniversary of their debut album Homework.
The broadcast lasted almost two hours and during this time, it amassed over 190.7K Hours Watched. On average, 104K viewers tuned in, with the highest peak of 176.7K concurrent viewers.
Their newly-created Twitch account accumulated 96.6K followers during the livestream and at the time of writing this article accounts for 160K followers.
In celebration of Homework’s 25th anniversary, Daft Punk also announced a vinyl deluxe edition of the album, which is set to release on April 15th. Nevertheless, it remains to be seen whether the popular duo plans to return to the scene.
