The Legend of Zelda 40th Anniversary Direct draws 2.24M Peak Viewers but misses Nintendo’s all-time top 10
On September 8, Nintendo held The Legend of Zelda 40th Anniversary Direct, a roughly 30-minute presentation celebrating four decades of one of its most iconic franchises. Viewers received new details about the Ocarina of Time remake, a special-edition Nintendo Switch 2, and the upcoming live-action adaptation. The showcase attracted more than 2.24 million concurrent viewers at its peak.
The Legend of Zelda Direct viewership statistics
The Legend of Zelda Direct broadcasts generated more than 1.8 million Hours Watched across livestreaming platforms, while their combined Peak Viewers reached 2.24 million. Nintendo’s official YouTube channels attracted the largest audiences, although the event was also covered by numerous community casters.
The most popular streamer covering The Legend of Zelda 40th Anniversary Direct was American creator Miles “Maximilian Dood” Christiansen. His YouTube and Twitch channels reached more than 34,000 combined Peak Viewers.

Despite reaching 2.24 million Peak Viewers, The Legend of Zelda 40th Anniversary Direct did not enter Nintendo’s all-time top 10 showcases by either Peak Viewers or Hours Watched. Among Nintendo’s 2026 presentations, it ranked second, behind Nintendo Direct June 2026. Among the year’s biggest gaming showcases, The Legend of Zelda 40th Anniversary Direct ranked sixth by Peak Viewers.

Most popular games showcases of 2026 by Peak Viewers
Nintendo Direct: Nintendo Switch 2 Showcase remains the company’s most-popular presentation by Peak Viewers. The reveal of Nintendo’s new console attracted more than 6.3 million concurrent viewers, one of the highest Peak Viewers totals ever recorded by a livestreamed gaming showcase.
Key announcements from The Legend of Zelda 40th Anniversary Direct
Unlike a regular Nintendo Direct, the presentation was built almost entirely around one series and covered not only upcoming games, but also hardware, a film adaptation, concerts, merchandise, and other anniversary activities.
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake
The main announcement was an extended look at the remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time for Nintendo Switch 2. Series producer Eiji Aonuma demonstrated the updated version, including redesigned visuals, free camera movement, manual jumping, motion-controlled aiming, and fully voiced cutscenes for characters other than Link.
The remake will also introduce Threads of Time, a feature that helps players follow their current objective and story progress. One of the more unusual additions uses the Switch 2 microphone, allowing players to perform ocarina melodies by humming or playing a real instrument. The game is scheduled for release on November 5, 2026.
The Legend of Zelda 40th Anniversary Edition Switch 2
Nintendo also presented a limited-edition Switch 2 inspired by The Legend of Zelda. The console, themed dock, Pro Controller, and carrying case will go on sale on October 29, although the Ocarina of Time remake will be sold separately.

New Young Link and Zelda amiibo figures were announced for 2027, alongside a Link and Epona LEGO set, playable ocarinas, and an electronic Master Sword.
The live-action The Legend of Zelda movie
Another part of the presentation focused on the upcoming live-action The Legend of Zelda film. Nintendo confirmed that the movie will tell an original story drawing on different elements from across the franchise rather than directly adapting one of the games.
The film is scheduled to arrive in cinemas on April 30, 2027, although the company did not show a full trailer or any footage during the Direct.
Concert tour and other anniversary activities
The anniversary program will also include an international orchestral concert tour beginning in 2027, as well as new attractions at the Nintendo Museum and additional features for the Zelda Notes companion app.
Despite the number of announcements, Nintendo did not reveal a new mainline Zelda game or the long-rumored Switch versions of The Wind Waker HD and Twilight Princess HD. As a result, the Ocarina of Time remake remained the clear centerpiece of the showcase.
