Destiny 2 received its 8th expansion, The Final Shape, on June 4, 2024. The new update brings a swathe of new content and storylines to the beloved title, and it has been one of the most successful expansions for Destiny 2 ever, at least as far as online viewership goes. This month of June has been the most-watched period for Destiny 2 on Twitch in well over a year and is on track to become the most-watched month for the game ever.
The new expansion for Destiny 2 has totally revitalised its viewership in live-streaming in general, but especially on Twitch. The game does receive some viewership on YouTube Live, but the vast majority of the watch time for the game comes from Twitch-based live streams, so this is where we will focus our view.
For the first two weeks of June, the game has received 17.7M Hours Watched on Twitch. This marks a 291% increase in watch time compared to the previous period, and it recorded 14.1K Peak Channels, which is not only a 664% increase compared to the previous period, but also the highest Peak Channels metric recorded for Twitch this month.
The game shot up the rankings to become the 6th-most-watched category on Twitch for June so far. The Final Shape expansion has not only brought viewers to Destiny 2, but also many many streamers. The title has recorded marked increases for both the amount of channels broadcasting the game, as well as viewers watching these streams.
The new world first race has brought many keen eyes to the title as fans and streamers race their way through the expansion to be the first to beat it. One key part of this highly increased viewership is the integration of Twitch Drops into the release of the new expansion. Looking at the most-watched Destiny 2 Twitch streams for June, the highest-ranking streams all mention Drops in their title, which has massively inflated the viewership of these streamers.
American creator Aztecross has enjoyed a massive wave of new viewers with the expansion. The streamer set a personal viewership record of 124.4K concurrent viewers on June 7, thanks to both excitement for the new expansion and the integration of Twitch Drops. The streamer has received 2.84M Hours Watched streaming Destiny 2 so far this month, and although this will have slowed down considering the Twitch Drops campaign ended on June 9, he may be able to reach 3M HW by the end of the month.
The rest of the streamers on this ranking follow essentially the same story as Aztecross: low but stable viewership in the past, but a huge wave of views on June 7th, thanks to Twitch Drops integration and the race for world first competition. Saltagreppo stands out from the crowd due to the sheer absurdity of his statistics. For his June 7th stream, the Italian creator recorded 1.03M HW, an increase of 146 475% compared to his previous stream, 71.3K PV, an increase of 8 686%, and 32.5K Followers Gain, an increase of 180 706%.
One broadcaster that stands out from the vastly American Destiny 2 streamers, the official TwitchRivals account. The channel streamed a special world first race on June 7th, featuring many of the most-watched creators for the day. Critically, the Twitch Drops integration also stipulated that for certain items viewers must watch either the TwitchRivals channel, or the channel of a player participating in the event. This heavily boosted the viewership of the participants in the race, as well as the TwtichRivals channel itself. The June 7th broadcast from TwitchRivals was its second-most-watched broadcast ever, recording 486.4K HW by the time it ended.
The expansion release, Drops integration, and race to world first event all culminated in two Destiny 2 streamers ranking at the top of Twitch. Both Aztecross and Datto landed within the most-watched streamers on the entire platform for June, with Aztecross outperforming some of the most well-known Twitch creators. This high-ranking is a testament to the success of Destiny 2’s release strategy.
As it stands, Destiny 2 has generated 17.44M Hours Watched on Twitch throughout the first half of June. This will almost certainly become Destiny 2’s most-watched month ever on Twitch, as it is already only 250K HW behind the record. Below, we have a table of the top 5 most-watched months for Destiny 2 on Twitch; this data only goes back until September 2019 as this is when we began collecting data.
