State of Play is Sony’s showcase event for upcoming releases, and to make announcements directly to their player base. Since being introduced in 2019, it has served as the go-to method for the company to make their biggest announcements, and Sony will be looking to kick 2025 off with a bang. The first State of Play for 2025 is taking place on February 12, as announced by Sony the day before.

Sony’s live show series has become a livestreaming phenomenon, often watched by well over a million concurrent viewers. The success of these events comes from Playstation’s 16M YouTube Subscribers, combined with a vast array of co-streamers, including organizational channels for news outlets and all sizes of content creators. Last year, Sony’s State of Play was broadcast by almost 750 channels, and the number of co-broadcasters is trending upwards. The upcoming State of Play could be one of Sony’s most popular live shows yet.

Each year, Sony’s live event shows are growing in popularity. 2024 was the most popular year for the State of Play series ever, with its year-starting show generating the most viewership; Sony will be hoping for a repeat this year, and another record-breaking start to the year for the video game company. This growth is fuelled by more and more interest from co-streamers to cover the events each year. For 2025, Sony again allowed co-streaming, although they noted copyrighted content such as licensed music may play on stream, which could affect VOD archives or uploaded recaps.

As the gaming community builds up to Sony’s exciting event, rumours circulate as fans discuss what could be announced. Many leakers and insiders have hinted at various games to be teased or announced, although nothing is officially confirmed by Sony. Death Stranding 2, another Metal Gear Solid title, God of War remasters, a new Wolverine game, and many others are some of the projects hoped for by fans this year.
