IShowSpeed sets new YouTube personal viewership record, but there's a catch

IShowSpeed sets new YouTube personal viewership record, but there's a catch
Share:

According to Streams Charts, IShowSpeed hit a record 1.9 million peak viewers during his YouTube stream in the Dominican Republic. But there’s a catch: the numbers don’t really line up with his usual metrics.

How many viewers watched IShowSpeed's broadcast from the Dominican Republic?

On April 25, American streamer IShowSpeed kicked off a major Caribbean Tour, spending the last two weeks broadcasting IRL from various countries across the region.

During his visit to the Dominican Republic on May 6, he shattered two personal records simultaneously, drawing over 1.92 million Peak Viewers on YouTube and 109.5K PV on Twitch. With this milestone, IShowSpeed officially became the most-popular U.S. YouTube streamer of all time based on peak concurrent viewership for a single broadcast.

IShowSpeed’s Twitch record was partly driven by front-page promotion on the platform, which naturally resulted in a significant influx of viewers. Regarding IShowSpeed’s YouTube record, several streamers have pointed out suspicious viewership spikes during the broadcast that align with typical viewbotting patterns.

What's wrong with IShowSpeed record numbers on YouTube?

When Félix “xQc” Lengyel tuned into IShowSpeed’s broadcast from the Dominican Republic, he pointed out the unusually high concurrent viewership and raised the possibility of significant bot activity. That concern is not without basis, given the scale and dynamics of the numbers involved.

During his spring tour, IShowSpeed visited over a dozen countries without ever surpassing 100,000 Peak Viewers. Given that track record, the sudden surge to 1.9 million viewers stands out as a major anomaly.

Prior to the Dominican Republic, IShowSpeed’s Caribbean Tour averaged 60.8K viewers per stream. During the record-breaking broadcast, that average skyrocketed to 1.44 million viewers — a staggering 2,270% increase.

Some may attribute IShowSpeed’s viewership surge to his collaboration with Santiago “Alofoke” Matías, who acted as his guide in the Dominican Republic. While partnerships with established local creators can meaningfully boost reach, they rarely explain growth of this magnitude on their own. At the same time, the stream’s viewership curve appeared unusually flat, lacking the typical fluctuations seen in live broadcasts. That kind of sustained plateau is often associated with viewbotting patterns, as previously discussed in our whitepaper.

The number of active chatters stayed roughly the same as in his previous streams, which typically peaked around 50,000 viewers

Another red flag is the ratio of viewers to active chatters. While most viewers don't participate in chat, there is always a consistent percentage that does. During the record-breaking stream, average viewership surged by 2,270%, yet the number of active chatters grew by a mere 30.7%.

What did IShowSpeed do in the Dominican Republic?

Following the pattern of his previous international IRL tours, IShowSpeed spent his time connecting with fans, checking out local landmarks, trying the food, and linking up with fellow stars. In the Dominican Republic, he teamed up with Santiago “Alofoke” Matías, one of the nation’s biggest streamers, who showed him around and gave him a guided tour of the city.

During his walk, IShowSpeed even took a moment to bark back and forth with a fan. The hilarious encounter became one of the stream's biggest highlights and has already gone viral as a meme.

While visiting the country, IShowSpeed sampled traditional Dominican drinks and fruits and even learned how to dance bachata and merengue right in the streets, surrounded by massive crowds of fans. He also sat down for an interview with a local TV station, where he shared that growing up in Ohio around the Dominican community made him feel a deep personal connection with the culture.

What countries is Speed visiting on his Caribbean tour?

IShowSpeed kicked off his Caribbean Tour on April 25. He’s already hit an impressive list of stops, including Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, Dominica, the Dominican Republic, Grenada, Guadeloupe, Puerto Rico, Sint Maarten (which he visited twice), Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. He’s scheduled to wrap things up with visits to the Bahamas and Jamaica, though he might double back to a few previous spots — just like he did with Sint Maarten.
