Japan continues to dominate the genre — most watched VTubers on Twitch & YouTube Live in October 2022

VTubing has become a massive success on multiple streaming platforms, with the number of such streamers having grown a lot in the past couple of years. So what are VTubers, and why are they different from your average streamer? VTubers are content creators that use 2D or 3D virtual avatars to create content and interact with their viewers. It allows them to keep their identity a secret, since they don't need to use their voice, and you can’t see their true face. Streamers have the liberty to become their favorite anime character or create their custom avatar. Overall, it gives streamers total control over their image.

Streams Charts has compiled a large database of the most popular Vtubers across multiple live streaming services. Now everyone can easily find out which VTubers had the most popular broadcasts, how long they streams lasted, how many viewers watched these broadcasts, and much more.

As the name indicates, VTubers started on YouTube in the mid-2010s, and the trend originated in Japan. Since then, it has become a global phenomenon, and you can find plenty of VTubers on other streaming platforms such as Twitch, Nimo, Facebook, and others. Some of them are among the top content creators on their respective streaming platforms, and the number of VTubers doesn't stop increasing. Their type of content is very familiar, with most being variety streamers that play many video games, but also do casual chatting streams.

If you want to know more details about VTubers and its full history you can check our article about the topic. Streams Charts collected all the necessary data to present you with the most popular VTubers in the world over the past month.

The most watched VTubers in the World

In October there was no VTuber in the world as popular as Pekora Ch. Pekora Ch is part of hololive (which is a Japanese Virtual YouTuber agency) third generation of VTubers that debuted in 2019. She is Japanese and streams on YouTube, where she gathered a big fanbase, with thousands of viewers tuning into her broadcasts. In October, she streamed for a little over 71 hours, and viewers watched her broadcast for 2.25 million hours. Pekora Ch is a variety streamer, and she streams a plethora of games such as Resident Evil 6, Super Mario World, Minecraft, and many others. In many of her broadcasts, she is playing with fellow VTubers, and her streams are very entertaining, providing viewers with a lot of funny moments.

Just like Pekora Ch, Korone Ch is also a part of hololive, but she belongs to the “hololive Gamers” group, which has three more VTubers. She started streaming on the 13th of April 2019 on YouTube, and her content is based on video games, as she plays a wide variety of them, and rarely does anything else than play games. In the last month, her stream was watched for 1.59 million hours

Subaru Ch is also associated with hololive, and the Japanese content creator started streaming on 17th September 2018. She has a streaming style similar to Pekora Ch, streaming multiple games, but also doing some watch-along and “Just Chatting” type of broadcasts. During October her streams were watched for 1.56 million hours

As you can see in the picture above, seven of the ten content creators surpassed the 1 million Hours Watched mark last month, and even the three that didn’t do so weren't that far off. Most of the VTubers in this list come from Japan and South Korea. With six of them originating from Japan, and two from South Korea, to be more precise. The majority of the content creators in this list also stream on YouTube. Only two Western VTubers were able to make it into this list. They were Shylily from Germany and ironmouse from the United States.

Six of the content creators on the list are from South Korea, with all of them being a part of Parable Entertainment, a content creators agency.

South Korean VTuber 릴파 started streaming in 2019, but it was in 2021 that she rose to fame. In October her broadcasts were watched for 1.28 million hours, making her the second most-watched VTuber on the platform.

Ironmouse was the third most popular VTuber in October, with 937K Hours Watched. The North American VTuber started her streaming career in 2017, and originally she was an independent content creator. However, she then joined the US-based VTubers organization VShojo in 2020. Ironmouse streams mostly Just Chatting, and is known for her singing skills and unique personality. She gained 22K followers in October, the second most of all the channels on the list.

Every content creator in this list has an amazing chat engagement rate, with no channel being below the 10% mark, which is spectacular. VTuber 아이네_ has the most interacting chat of all the channels, with an astonishing 18.7% chat engagement rate.

Most watched VTubers on YouTube

YouTube is the best platform for VTubers since it's where the genre thrives. As we mentioned before the most popular YouTube creators are Pekora Ch with 2.25 million Hours Watched, followed by Korone Ch with 1.59 million HW, and Subaru Ch with 1.56 million HW. Only アルス・アルマル -ars almal- 【にじさんじ】is not a part of hololive, the biggest VTubers agency in Japan and arguably the whole world, as she is signed to Nijisanji Affiliation. She was watched for 692K hours last month and is known for playing multiple games, and doing voice impressions. Occasionally she just chats and interacts with her viewers.

The six most-watched content creators in this list also entered the list of the most popular VTubers in the world, which further proves that Japan has the most popular streamers of this genre. It also indicates that the best platform for VTubers is YouTube since it’s there you can find the most popular ones.

VTubing is growing at a quick pace, as the genre has already become mainstream in Japan and other Asian countries, and its popularity is also at an all-time high in Western countries. In Japan, it's already a big industry, with many agencies dedicated solely to VTubers. VTubers have become some of the most popular streamers on Twitch and YouTube, and we expect to see new VTubers rise to fame in the near future.
