A new online learning platform staffed entirely by active VTubers has officially launched in Japan, introducing a fresh twist to digital education.
Tokyo-based education company LuminariS announced the rollout of its new service, Wish High, on February 17. The program offers live and archived online classes taught exclusively by currently active VTubers, marking what the company describes as a “first-of-its-kind initiative in Japan”.
Courses and pricing
Wish High focuses primarily on high school students, particularly those who face geographic limitations or difficulties attending traditional schools. However, the platform is also open to middle school students and adult learners.
Available subjects include:
-
Mathematics
-
English
-
Physics
-
Chemistry
-
Classical Japanese
-
World History
-
Japanese History
-
Geography
Each subject is priced at ¥9,900 per month (approximately $65-70 USD). Lessons are delivered live and subsequently archived, allowing students to revisit content on demand.
The service had previously been offered in limited formats for group instruction and corporate use, but this launch expands availability to individual learners nationwide.
Why VTubers?
According to the company, traditional online lectures often struggle with engagement and long-term motivation. By incorporating VTuber instructors, digital avatars operated by real individuals, the platform aims to create a more immersive and interactive learning experience while maintaining the flexibility of remote education.
VTubing: From niche trend to mainstream industry
VTubing, short for “Virtual YouTubing”, refers to content creators who use animated avatars, typically powered by motion capture and real-time facial tracking, instead of appearing on camera themselves. The format first gained major traction in Japan in the mid-2010s and expanded rapidly through livestreaming platforms in the late 2010s and early 2020s.

What began as an experimental entertainment format has since evolved into a global industry. Major VTuber agencies now manage large rosters of creators, livestream viewership regularly reaches hundreds of thousands for top talents, and VTubers have expanded into music, esports, brand partnerships, and large-scale live events. In recent years, the format has become one of the fastest-growing segments of online streaming culture.
VTuber analytics and industry data
For those tracking the growth of the VTuber ecosystem, Streams Charts maintains an extended VTuber database covering individual creators, creator agencies, livestream performance metrics, audience demographics and historical viewership trends. The platform provides in-depth statistics designed for analysts, brands and industry stakeholders monitoring the expanding virtual creator economy.
