TikTok Live suffers viewership dip in Q1 2026 even as gaming content grows

TikTok Live suffers viewership dip in Q1 2026 even as gaming content grows
Share:

The first quarter of 2026 has been a busy time in the livestreaming industry. On TikTok Live, the year began with a bang and then suffered a decline as legalities with the United States government played a part. As a result, it ended with the biggest quarter-over-quarter decline among the four major platforms, with the other three being Twitch, YouTube Live, and Kick.

While the numbers on Twitch and Kick saw QoQ jumps, thanks to streamer events and the start of the new esports season in earnest, TikTok Live went the other way. Interestingly, the first month of the year was good for the video-sharing application, as on-the-move content from the holiday season kept things sprightly. However, things changed, as the absence or changes in regulations of the US market affected viewership.

Data from TikTokStats.com indicates that TikTok Live experienced a quarter-over-quarter decline of around 12% in watch time, with Q1 2026 numbers standing at 8.83 million Hours Watched (HW). As a result, the gap that the popular mobile app had pulled back on market leader YouTube Live has grown again.

It remains to be seen if these figures are a long-term issue or if it's just a temporary adjustment phase. One positive to emerge from the Q1 2026 data is that gaming content continues to find more traction, which could benefit the service as it looks to get back to challenging YouTube Live for the top spot.

How did TikTok Live's viewership fare in Q1 2026?

TikTok Live's viewership compared to other major platforms in Q1 2026

TikTok Live, as per our Q1 2026 Global Livestreaming Landscape report, saw a steep viewership decline in the first quarter of the year. YouTube Live also saw a slip in its QoQ watch time numbers, but the tech giant went through a more negligible 0.24% fall.

This reflected the overall trend for Q1 2026, as total Hours Watched across the analyzed platforms experienced a 3% quarter-over-quarter drop compared to Q4 2025. Even though Kick and Twitch enjoyed rises in their watch time numbers compared to the final three months of last year, TikTok's relatively steep descent can be traced to the major cause of this overall decrease.

As mentioned earlier, TikTok started the year strong as its mobile-native offerings ensured that streamers continued to churn out content, but things slowed down from February. This can partly be put down to the separation of its US operations, as existing data suggests a likely correlation.

One positive was that gaming content continued to grow in importance and impact on the platform. With more and more esports action finding its way to the app, video gaming is becoming a big part of its algorithm, buoyed by a younger demographic of users more inclined to take to such streams. As a result, the segment's quarter-on-quarter share spiked by almost 3% in Q1 2026.

What were the most popular categories on TikTok Live in Q1 2026?

Most popular categories and games on TikTok Live in Q1 2026

The Chats category maintained its position as the undisputed king of TikTok Live's categories section. Even though its QoQ numbers fell by 16%, it still accumulated almost three times higher watch time figures than the next best segment.

Speaking of second-best, Fashion was the only other category to top 1 billion watch hours in Q1 2026. A lull in the industry's usually busy schedule as new year festivities took over seemed to have played its part, but it looks unlikely the remaining quarters of the year will see such dips.

The remaining three categories in the top five also suffered falls in their quarter-on-quarter watch times, with Outdoors rounding off the podium. Talents took the fourth spot, as casual lifestyle content plays a big part of the TikTok appeal, with this table rounded out by a name that has slowly become the top offering among video games on a service usually dominated by mobile titles.

Coming to TikTok Live's gaming segment, it continued to see Roblox lead the charts. This online game creation system, where users can concoct myriad games and share these creative offerings with the world, has seemingly become the mobile app's favorite when it comes to playing and watching video gaming content. This was reflected in the fact that even though its QoQ watch hours dropped by 6%, it still retained a healthy lead over the next-best game by HW.

Garena Free Fire once again finished second in our TikTok Live quarterly rankings, raking in almost 214 million HW in Q1 2026. Joining it on this top five table are Mobile Legends: Bang Bang and PUBG Mobile, two other titles that enjoy strong engagement from regional mobile gaming audiences, with some markets crossing over into each other, across the world.

Grand Theft Auto V, thanks to its memeable content and extreme popularity on livestreaming platforms, finished fifth here. With the highly anticipated next instalment scheduled to be released at the end of 2026, it won't be surprising if this title continues to capture the attention of video game lovers across platforms throughout the year.

TikTok Live might have started the year slowly, and its Q1 2026 numbers might have fallen short of what we have come to expect, but there's a lot of time left in the year for it to shake off any viewership concerns. The gap to YouTube Live will especially be worth following across the remaining quarters, as will the growing impact of gaming content on the platform.
