Over the past year, Twitch saw an exponential growth of Brazilian content creators. We analyzed the top 100 Portuguese-speaking Twitch streamers for Q1 2021. Read our article to find out how many non-Brazilians have made it to the top and how female streaming has grown compared to the previous quarter.
Disclaimer: the analyzed rating was sorted by Hours Watched (hours that viewers spent watching streamers' broadcasts). Channels of studios or gaming communities were excluded.
Between January 1 and March 31, 2021, the top 100 Portuguese-speaking streamers generated 225.6M Hours Watched. In the scope of Twitch as a whole, this is a small figure that is equal to merely 3.7% of the platform’s total Hours Watched in the first quarter. But when taking a look at the Portuguese language alone, the top 100 streamers are responsible for 50.4% Hours Watched of the entirety of Portuguese-speaking streamers.
The leadership of Brazilians in the top 100 is confirmed when looking at the distribution by country: with 93 streamers being from Brazil, six from Portugal, and one from Paraguay. In total, they’ve spent 69.4K hours in terms of Airtime. The overall numbers saw virtually no changes from Q4 2020.
The top 100 Portuguese-speaking streamers for Q1 2021 included 9 female streamers – which is one of the highest numbers among all languages represented on Twitch. To compare, Q4 2020 featured only 7 female streamers. Holding the second spot was loud_coringa. The LOUD organization appeared on Twitch only in October last year but has managed to gain a foothold in the region. While coringa spent only 366 hours on the air, this brought 21.08M Hours Watched from the viewers of his broadcasts – which constitutes 9.3% of the Hours Watched of all the top 100 streamers of Q1.
The 3rd and 4th spots were taken by YoDa and alanzoka, who have amassed 12.81M and 9.89M Hours Watched, respectively. The top 5 was closed by loud_bak. Despite the streamer amassing only 5.64M Hour Watched, his February 11th broadcast became the most popular among Portuguese-speaking viewers in Q1 2021, gathering a total of 506.8K Peak Viewers.
Leading among the female streamers was loud_babi, another representative of the LOUD organization. She spent 305 hours on the air, while viewers spent 2.79M hours watching her broadcasts. The top 5 also included Renata_Giovanna, yayahuz, paulanobre, and Gabi – the Hours Watched generated by these streamers ranged from 1.35M to 1.15M. It should be noted that yayahuz was the only representative of Paraguay in the ranking.
In total, five representatives of the LOUD organization entered the top 100 Portuguese-speaking streamers in Q1 2021 – and they have generated 32.3M Hours Watched (which corresponds to 14.3% of the total Hours Watched of the top 100 streamers).
CS:GO became the most popular category among viewers. Only 46 out of the top 100 streamers were broadcasting this game in the first quarter of 2021, but the viewers spent over 43.59M Hours Watched on their broadcasts (which is 19.3% of the total). Moreso, 65% of these Hours Watched belong to the viewers of Gaules. On his personal channel, Gaules commented on a number of major tournaments in the discipline (including BLAST Premier Global Final 2020) in Portuguese.
Just Chatting attracted the most streamers: 87 streamers from the top 100 streamed in this category at least once between January and March. At the same time, the title took the third spot in terms of Hours Watched (21.1M, corresponding to 9.4% of the total Hours Watched).
The top 5 also included Grand Theft Auto V (2nd spot and 36.21M Hours Watched), League of Legends (3rd spot and 29.62M), and Garena Free Fire (5th spot and 13.24M).
CS:GO also became the most popular game among viewers of male streamers – 43.1M Hours Watched, or 20.1% of the total Hours Watched for male streamers. All in all, the ranking of the games associated with the male streamers is a complete repeat of the overall ranking, without any significant differences.
Things are a little different when it comes to the female streamers, with Grand Theft Auto V being the most popular category among their viewers (although the girls themselves streamed more in the Just Chatting category). All in all, the viewers spent over 3.7M hours watching their GTA V streams (which is 32.8% of the girls’ total number of Hours Watched).
At the same time, Brazilian girls and their viewers were also attracted by VALORANT, with viewers spending 9.1% watching the girls' broadcasts on this shooter.
Analyzing the top 100, we detected the following audience overlaps among the top 5 Portuguese-speaking streamers in Q1 2021. The representatives of LOUD have shown the largest overlap percentage, with 57.2% of viewers of loud_bak also watching the streams of loud_coringa, and 42.9% of the latter’s viewers also visited the streams of bak. At the same time, the audience of those two doesn’t seem to interact this much with the rest of the streamers.
Note: the rows indicate the % of that channel’s audience that watch other channels’ streams, and the columns indicate the % of that channel’s audience collected from other channels.
Despite the significant growth of the Portuguese-language content on Twitch in 2020, the Q1 2021 indicators of the language’s leading streamers have only shown a minimal decrease, with a 0.5% difference with the Q4 2020 in terms of Hours Watched. On the contrary, the interest of the Portuguese-speaking audience in female streamers has grown.
It should be noted that this trend did not affect the overall performance of Twitch: Q1 2021 Hours Watched have almost doubled compared to Q1 2020, and increased by 800M compared to Q4 2020.
