The holidays are a time most people use to decompress and take a break from their busy working schedules. During the Christmas holidays, people disconnect from technology and spend more time creating memories with their family and loved ones. It’s a time when family and tradition come first, while technology takes a back seat.
This is no different in the streaming world, as streamers also use the Christmas holidays to relax, and spend time with their loved ones. During the Christmas holidays, Twitch activity it’s at its lowest, with most viewers and streamers taking a break from the platform. We at Streams Charts collected all the necessary data to show you how the Twitch activity of people of different languages changed during the Christmas holidays, and what are the reasons for it.

As mentioned above, during the Christmas holidays, viewers and streamers take time off from the digital world. This means that there are way fewer creators broadcasting on Twitch, and also fewer viewers. Many use this time to go on vacation, relax, and prepare for 2023.
If we take a look at the graph, we can see that the English, Spanish, and Portuguese language all have a huge drop in Christmas and New Year’s Eve. On both days, people rather spend their time with their families and friends, opening presents, playing board games, or celebrating the arrival of a new year. However, on New Year’s Eve, there are still plenty of English content creators streaming. For most English streamers, while Christmas revolves around tradition and family time, New Year’s Eve doesn't. Brazilian streamers, on the other hand, were mostly inactive on New Year’s Eve rather than on Christmas.
Only 24K unique English channels were broadcasting on Christmas Eve, with the numbers for the Spanish and Portuguese languages being even lower, at 4.9K and 2.6K respectively. On New Year’s Eve, the numbers were similar in the Spanish and Portuguese languages, but the English language saw a slight increase, with 31K unique broadcasting channels. This is because many English creators broadcasted their New Year's Eve, something most Spanish and Portuguese streamers didn’t do. Worth noting that, the German language suffered a slight drop in Christmas and New Year’s Eve, but of all the languages, it was the one that saw the smallest decrease in the metric.
Thousands of content creators, from multiple languages, used the Christmas holidays to relax, stepping away from the platform for a few days. Viewers did the same thing, enjoying this time with their family and friends. This explains why the activity on the website was much lower than usual, especially on Christmas and New Year’s Eve. Both days are normally spent with family and friends, playing traditional games, or just chatting with each other. With many traditions being forgotten in today's day and age, the Christmas holidays traditions are some of the few that are still going strong.
