The main highlight of August on Twitch was the streams of the Tortilla Land Minecraft RP server. Thanks to these broadcasts some content creators managed to break into the top 10 most popular streamers of the month. The ranking of the male streamers had a big shift — xQc retained his leadership, but his competitors are gradually closing the gap. As for female streamers, Amouranth is back in the top spot, though rivers_gg is slowly getting closer to her every month. In a new Streams Charts article, we sum up the results of the month and tell you about the most popular categories and channels on Twitch.
Most Popular Twitch Games of August 2022
Just Chatting became the most popular Twitch category in August. It accumulated 261.6 million Hours Watched in a month, which is 8 million fewer than in July (-3%). At the same time, the Peak Viewers' number of the category increased from 846K to 1 million viewers (+19%).
In second place at the end of the month is League of Legends. The game from Riot Games accumulated 133 million Hours Watched, and its Peak Viewers number was 854K viewers. At the end of July, it had 121 million Hours Watched and 546K Peak Viewers, respectively. The audience growth can be attributed to the regional leagues. For example, LCK Summer Split — the most popular professional league in League of Legends — was over at the end of August.
Grand Theft Auto V, which ranked fourth a month earlier, moved up to third place in the Twitch ranking of most popular sections in August. The game got 130.4 million Hours Watched — 10 million more than in July. But the Peak Viewers number of the category decreased slightly in a month, from 497K to 459K viewers.
Fourth place is taken by the shooter Valorant by Riot Games. In August it accumulated 111.4 million Hours Watched (-8%), and the Peak Viewers' number was 702K people (+2%). We should remind you that at the end of July the game was in the top 3 in the ranking, but at that time VCT 2022: Stage 2 Masters - Copenhagen provided a large audience to the category.
Fifth place in August is taken by Minecraft. In a month the game's audience reach grew from 55.6 million to 92.1 million viewers (+66%). The Peak Viewers number rose from 755K to 810K people (+7.5%). The growth of the section is attributed to the activity of popular streamers on the Tortilla Land RP server. ELSpreen alone accumulated over 12.7 million Hours Watched in a month thanks to playing Minecraft. There are also auronplay (9.1 million) and ELMariana (4.5 million) who made a big impact on the result.
Battle Royale Apex Legends dropped from fifth to sixth place. In August, the game racked up 57.1 million Hours Watched and drew 247K Peak Viewers. In July, for comparison, it had 55.6 million Hours Watched and 510K Peak Viewers, respectively — at that time, the PV number was heavily influenced by the broadcasts of ALGS: 2022 Championship tournament.
Dota 2 went from ninth to seventh place — the game by Valve in August accumulated 56.7 million Hours Watched (+25%), and its Peak Viewers number was 536K people (+59%). The big increase here is explained by the fact that last month there were two major tournaments — PGL Arlington Major 2022 and ESL One Malaysia 2022. These events influenced the popularity of the game on Twitch.
Eighth place in the ranking is taken by the Slots category. It racked up 50.6 million Hours Watched (+12%) in a month and attracted 205K Peak Viewers (-27%). The most active streamers in August in this category are Trainwreckstv, ROSHTEIN and xQc.
In the ninth position is the battle royale Fortnite by Epic Games. Its numbers remained virtually unchanged over the month, totaling 45.3 million Hours Watched and 238K Peak Viewers compared to 47.7 million HW and 237K PV in July.
The shooter CS:GO by Valve rounds out the Top-10 most popular categories, accumulating 42.5 million Hours Watched (-17%) and drawing 312K Peak Viewers (-71.5%). This is significantly lower than in July, but at that time the popularity of the category was strongly influenced by IEM Cologne 2022. There were no such big tournaments in the last month of summer.
Most Popular Twitch Channels of August 2022
Most Popular Channels and Male Streamers in August 2022
The Canadian streamer xQc retained the lead in the ranking of the most popular Twitch channels. In August, his channel accumulated 17.7 million Hours Watched, 10% fewer than it did in July. In general, xQc's position at the top remains stable for now, although it is not completely dominant as it used to be. It is important to note that xQc's slight decline in statistics was due to the fact that he spent less time on air.
ElSpreen, who was not even in the Top-10 at the end of July, unexpectedly broke into second place in the August ranking. The Argentinean streamer amassed 15.2 million Hours Watched in the past month. Minecraft and his games on the Tortilla Land RP server brought him more than 12.7 million Hours Watched.
The Spanish streamer auronplay is in third place in the ranking with 12.69 million Hours Watched. Similar to ElSpreen, he was not in the top 10 at the end of July, but in August he attracted a large audience thanks to Minecraft and broadcasts of Tortilla Land.
Another newcomer to the ranking is KaiCenat, who took fourth place at the end of August with 12.63 million Hours Watched. The popular pranker and ticktocker has been gaining popularity on Twitch and has already done collaborations with Mizkif, AdinRoss, and Amouranth. Kai spends his time mainly in the Just Chatting category, and sometimes he plays GTA V and Minecraft. In August, he ran his first 24-hour marathon, during which he set several records on his channel.
Trainwreckstv ranks fifth with 9.95 million Hours Watched. Trainwreckstv had almost no streamers in July, so he was not in the top of last month, but in August he was actively broadcasting the Slots category and arranged giveaways on the streams.
The Brazilian streamer Gaules takes sixth place in the ranking. His channel had 8.1 million Hours Watched in August, 15% fewer than in July when he was third. As usual, Gaules was broadcasting almost non-stop (with replays) and mostly streaming CS:GO (4.3 million Hours Watched).
Tarik went straight from second place to seventh. By the end of August, the HW number of the American streamer decreased from 9.7 million to 7.3 million, and his airtime decreased from 270 to 205 hours. The reason for the decrease in metrics is simple: in July Tarik actively streamed VCT 2022: Stage 2 Masters - Copenhagen, and in August the whole Valorant esports scene narrowed down to Last Chance Qualifier matches, which cannot be compared with the audience coverage at a major international championship.
Eighth in the ranking is loud_coringa, who previously ranked in the Top-5. In August, his channel accumulated 6.7 million Hours Watched and was on air for 131 hours. In comparison, in July, loud_coringa had 8.44 million HW and was on air for 124 hours. The Brazilian spent the most time playing GTA V and CS:GO, as usual.
The American HasanAbi ranks ninth in the Top with 6.2 million Hours Watched. HasanAbi did not make it into the July rankings, but in August he entertained viewers in the Just Chatting category. As usual, the streamer made content on the discussion of celebrities, political events and scandals.
Finally, the Top-10 most watched streamers on Twitch in August is rounded out by ibai, the Spaniard. He racked up 6.36 million Hours Watched in a month, spending about 104 hours on air. He achieved this result thanks to his broadcasts of the Minecraft RP server Tortilla Land.
It should be noted that five streamers of the July ranking did not make it into the Top 10 at the end of August. These are Rubius, llloJuan, fps_shaka, ROSHTEIN and eliasn97. If we add official channels of esports tournaments to the ranking, the last three places at the top will be taken by RocketLeague (7.2 million HW), PGL_Dota2 (6.9 million HW), and LCK_Korea (6.8 million HW). These channels draw their audiences thanks to RLCS 2021-22 - World Championship, PGL Arlington Major 2022, and LCK Summer 2022 Summer Split Finals.
Most Popular Female Twitch Streamers of August 2022
Amouranth once again confirmed her status as the most popular streamer on Twitch. At the end of August, her channel had 2.92 million Hours Watched, 380K fewer than a month earlier. But her airtime increased from 300 to 336 hours.
Rivers_gg, who previously was in third place, moved up to second place in the ranking. In August, she increased her audience reach to 2.16 million Hours Watched (+36%). She did it mostly with the help of Just Chatting and Minecraft streams.
The German streamer RevedTV (1.43 million HW) ranks third in the ranking. In August she was on air for more than 200 hours, most of which she spent in the Just Chatting category. In July RevedTV was not even in the Top-10, but last month she was on air most of the time during her seven-day streaming marathon.
Streamers who had almost the same number of Hours of Watched take fourth through eighth places. These are female streamers from the U.S. and South Korea, as well as 39daph from Canada and biyin_ from Spain. They mostly talked in the Just Chatting category, played Minecraft, League of Legends, and other games. The last two positions are taken by Kyedae and Shylily, who are slightly behind the others, but mostly do the same things.
Without taking into account Amouranth's unquestionable superiority, the competition of female streamers is very intense, and only one or two successful streams can influence their high position in the Top. We should also note the unexpected drop of Jinnytty. She was second in July with 2.45 million Hours Watched, but in August she accumulated only 944K HW and did not make it into the top 10.
Most Popular Twitch Streams of August 2022
The most popular broadcast in the last month is the Spanish streamer auronplay's broadcast of playing on the Tortilla Land Minecraft RP server. The broadcast took place on August 14 and attracted 369K Peak Viewers. The same event helped ElSpreen to reach 193.1K Peak Viewers, which is the eighth highest result in the rankings.
The top 3 most popular broadcasts in August include a presentation by the studio Bungie, which introduced the add-on "Lightfall" for their game Destiny 2. This broadcast was watched by more than 339K Peak Viewers. During the short stream on Genshin Impact's channel, the viewership number was slightly fewer — 315K Peak Viewers.
Other popular broadcasts are related to esports tournaments and matches: LCK Summer 2022 Final between Gen.G and T1, RLCS World Championship 2021/2022 Semifinal between FaZe Clan and G2 Esports, American VCT Last Chance Qualifiers community-cast by Tarik, Excel Esports game against Fnatic in LEC Summer 2022 Playoffs, and Superliga Summer 2022 broadcast by ibai.
