Craziest stories to come out of TwitchCon

Craziest stories to come out of TwitchCon
Share:

TwitchCon is one of the rare opportunities for the live-streaming community to meet up en masse and socialise with each other. Streamers not only get to meet fans but take part in events and network with each other. TwitchCon has been a yearly event since 2015 when the inaugural event was held in San Francisco. Since then, Twitch also announced a yearly European event to take place alongside the North American convention.

TwitchCon Paris 2023 came and went this past weekend, with no shortage of drama and crazy moments, check out our top clips of the weekend here. Looking at these clips inspired our team at Streams Charts to take a look back at the top five craziest TwitchCon moments of all time.

#5 Adriana Chechik breaks back at Lenovo x Intel

TwitchCon is no stranger to injuries and streamers getting knocked around, but this one was different. On the Sunday of TwitchCon 2022 San Diego, Twitch streamer Adriana Chechik took part in a foam-jousting game. After triumphing, she lept from her pedestal into the foam pit and landed on her tailbone. Tragically, the foam pit was not sufficiently padded and the streamer broke her back in two places, all caught on live-stream and immediately going viral.

Adriana was sadly not the only person to come away worse off after jumping into the foam pit. Streamer LochVaness went to Twitter to explain how she’d dislocated her knee and sprained her ankle dropping down from the pedestal into the pit. Both streamers affected required a hospital visit, and Adriana required surgery after breaking her back in two places.

Twitch declined to comment on the issue at the time, directing media outlets to contact Lenovo or Intel instead, as it was their booth and their game. Adriana remained positive and after her surgery took time to slowly recover. The streamer is now fully back in action on Twitch on her channel AdrianaCheckik_.

#4 Knut kicked out of TwitchCon Berlin

Norwegian bodybuilder and streamer Knut was attending TwitchCon 2019 Berlin where he was eventually removed from the premises for…. Streaming?

At the time, Knut claimed he had no idea why he was being removed from the event, explaining four security guards approached him and told him he had to leave. The streamer didn’t even have time to grab his things. It was later revealed that fellow streamer Silker had taken over Knut’s stream and went live on Knut’s account, proceeding to enter a restricted area. Not only was Silker not allowed to enter, being a non-partner, but the area he entered was also a no-streaming longue for partners.

Knut wasn’t the only streamer to be caught out by the no-streaming areas of the event. Fellow streamer Destiny was forced to end his stream after broadcasting in the same partner longue, and Pokimane was asked to turn off her stream while simply walking down a hallway outside the partner longue. TwitchCon’s staff didn’t relax the restrictions either, eventually deciding to ban streaming on the entire floor of the event.

It sadly didn’t end for Knut there. The Norwegian streamer couldn’t catch a break, eventually receiving an email from Twitch that he had breached the event’s Code of Conduct, and therefore would be banned from the TwitchCon San Diego that was taking place later that year. His ticket was revoked and warned by Twitch that if he attempted to attend the event he would be escorted off the premises. Thankfully, Knut was present at the recent TwitchCon Paris 2023, so it seems like it's all water under the bridge for Knut and the streaming platform.

#3 Megan Thee Stallion performs with the best MC

Megan Thee Stallion is one of the biggest rappers in the industry

Twitch continues to grow and grow, each and every TwitchCon somehow becoming more elaborate and with a larger budget. Following their growth, Twitch announced for the TwitchCon 2022 San Diego party Megan Thee Stallion would headline an all-women lineup for the event. The Grammy-winning rapper being confirmed for the event is proof of how mainstream the TwitchCons are becoming and how much money Twitch is willing to spend on it.

Live streaming fans were not prepared for a surprise appearance by the best MC of all time: Master Chief. The green spartan joined Megan on stage and hyped up the crowd, dancing behind the rapper as she performed her songs for the crowd. Not a rule breaker of any kind, Master Chief walked out wearing his official TwitchCon lanyard.

The surprise appearance by the beloved video-game character went down well with the crowd, as fans can be heard not only cheering for Megan but going over the edge when the green video-game protagonist walks out.

#2 JiDion tricks TwitchCon security staff

YouTube creator and prankster JiDion made headlines at TwitchCon 2022 Amsterdam when he managed to break into the event, before eventually being kicked out. The ex-Twitch streamer received a permanent ban on the platform a year ago and made the change to a full-time YouTuber. Although the American prankster claims no one knows why he was removed from the event, British streamer TommyInnit spoke up and claimed JiDion was harassing his fans and was removed as a result.

The American vehemently denies any claims of bullying and eventually uploaded his footage of the event to his YouTube channel. The footage released by JiDion showed him being, although loud and boisterous, relatively well-mannered and good-natured. Some fans took issue with his loudness and flagged him down to security, but eventually, the security moved on after telling him to bring down the volume.

Although JiDion enjoyed some more time in the venue, it seems the initial interaction with security put him under the watchful eye of the event’s security staff, who in the end removed JiDion from the premises for wearing a fake badge. The streamer went live outside the venue, proclaiming that Twitch needed to improve their security for such events and that he would see them again in San Diego, for the North American TwitchCon event.

As the event took place for a second time that year in San Diego, JiDion took to Instagram to post pictures of the venue, both from inside and outside. The kicker? The prankster was not even at the event. He revealed in a video after the event that he simply had asked friends of his to send him pictures for him to post. The stars aligned when JiDion’s pictures of the event lined up with another streamer’s prank.

Twitch streamer Samham dressed up like JiDion, donned sunglasses and a mask and took to the event, impersonating the American prankster. Being a Twitch partner himself, Samham had no issues entering the event and quickly began to get swarmed by JiDion fans. Fans began to follow him and ask for photos, and eventually security caught on and stopped the impersonator to make sure his badge was legitimate.

Samham even made a guest appearance on a panel at the event, continuing his deception of not only fans but also other streamers. By the end of the charade, even Twitch streamer and friend of JiDion iziprime was fooled. It all climaxed as iziprime Facetimed JiDion and showed off his impersonator.

Honourable mentions

Before we come to a close, let's name some honourable mentions for this list.

Dream’s first unmasked panel YouTube titan Dream initially gained popularity on the site around 2019. Since then the creator has become one of the biggest Minecraft creators in the industry, amassing over 31M subscribers on his YouTube channel.

In October of last year, the creator finally revealed his face to his fans and shortly after attended TwitchCon San Diego 2022. The panel was made up of Dream’s friends and co-creators who play on the same Minecraft server, and fans went wild. The panel was one of the most popular of the event as fans rushed to see Dream finally in person. xQc even told his stream a security guard at the event reported almost ten people fainted after just seeing Dream.

Team_Nikachu has cosplay soiled Creator and cosplayer Team_Nikachu attended TwitchCon 2022 Amsterdam dressed up as Ciri from The Witcher series. She shared her story on Twitch streamers Arab’s channel, explaining how a venue employee broke her cosplay sword.

Cosplayers spend hours and hours building up their costumes, and this was no different. Nikachu witnessed a worker at the RAI Amsterdam break her sword in half right in front of her. According to the streamer, this was no accident. She saw the employee handling her sword and yelled at him to leave her property alone before the worker broke it in half. Nikachu was naturally furious after this disrespect and decided to spend her remaining time at TwitchCon without cosplaying.

#1 Greedgodx and Tyler1 finally meet

Greekgodx (left) and Tyler1 (right) finally meet at TwitchCon 2017

TwitchCons are events full of thousands of people, either streamers, fans, or curious attendees, and so many people are not easily looked after. Despite drama over injuries, interactions with security staff, or perceived lack of planning by Twitch for the event, the community convention is and always has been about bringing the international streaming community together.

Greekgodx is a British streamer who began gaining traction in 2016 as a stream sniper. He eventually found himself playing H1Z1 alongside popular League of Legends streamer Tyler1. Tyler1 is currently one of the most popular League of Legends streamers in the world, with over 5.2M Followers on Twitch. After receiving a ban from the game due to his interactions with teammates, his return stream in 2018 received over 382K concurrent viewers. The two immediately found they had chemistry together and their stream audience loved their interactions, even though Greekgodx still did not have a Twitch channel at the time. The British streamer finally launched his streaming debut in 2017 and rose to quick success through his exposure to the community on Tyler1’s channel.

After spending so much time on and off-stream together, the chance finally came for the two to cross the pond and meet when both streamers decided to attend TwitchCon 2017 in Long Beach, California. Tyler1 snuck up on the Brit while he was live streaming his fan meets and interactions, and the two streamers coming to terms with finally seeing each other and being able to share a hug proved too much for Greekgodx, who began to cry.

At the end of the day, these heartwarming interactions are the soul of TwitchCon and the vision of the staff behind these events. Although issues may come and go with the event, the live-streaming community is the beating heart of such events. TwitchCon returns this October to the Las Vegas Convention Center, and although the details of the event are still not released, this TwitchCon may be the biggest event of the year in the live streaming sphere.
