Streaming platform Nimo TV, owned by Chinese video live streaming service Huya, is shutting down global operations. The shutdown affected 14 countries, including two major platform regions — Brazil and Indonesia. Statements to that effect appeared on the platform's official pages in those countries.
According to Brazil Country Manager, Tulio Chebli, to Esports Insider, Huya has been suffering several sanctions from the Chinese government, which include limiting gaming or streaming time for the country’s under 18 population. Such sanctions made Huya’s investor, Tencent, back off funding to Huya’s global project, forcing Nimo TV to shutter operations.
Chebli said that for Nimo TV's Brazilian staff, the news of the platform's closure in the region came as a surprise, and they learned about it on April 14. About 200 employees and partnered streamers will be out of work. As for Indonesia, Nimo TV's gaming division will leave the region by the end of April.
Streams Charts previously published a big overview of the Nimo TV platform's viewership statistics from mid-2021 through March 2022. Only in the first quarter of 2022, Nimo TV's audience generated 1.9 billion Hours Watched.
