Oscars 2024 Twitch discussions

The official broadcast of the ceremony aired on the ABC television channel, and any attempts to live-stream it on streaming services led to immediate bans. However, numerous live streams on YouTube were dedicated to the events surrounding the ceremony. For instance, news channels like Associated Press, TNT America Latina, and CNN covered the red carpet show, conducted interviews with stars, showcased highlights from previous awards, and shared commentary from film critics and experts. The audience for such broadcasts reached 45K Peak Viewers.

The Oscars 2024 event was also discussed by many popular Twitch streamers such as Cellbit and HasanAbi. Primarily, they engaged with their audience discussing the ceremony, expressing opinions about the nominees, and predicting the winners. However, these streamers did not broadcast the actual awards ceremony, only sharing their impressions with their audience.

The 95th Academy Awards and 96th Academy Awards schedules are time-synchronized at the start of the ceremony. In 2024, the event started an hour earlier.

The 96th Academy Awards sparked the most active discussions in the chat of Brazilian streamer Cellbit — his viewers left over 700 messages about the ceremony. Slightly fewer mentions were found on the channel of American streamer carolinekwan, who often discusses movie news and showbiz on her streams. Also among the top three channels by the number of mentions was the channel of Spanish streamer polispol1. Interestingly, last year it was polispol1 who led among all channels discussing the 95th Academy Awards.

This year, the film awards were more frequently discussed on Brazilian streamer channels. This was largely influenced by the song "I’m Just Ken" performed by Ryan Gosling — it went viral in Brazil, often used on TikTok and in various parody videos. During the ceremony, Gosling sang this song on stage, prompting active reactions from Brazilian viewers in Twitch chats.

In terms of the dynamics of mentions, this time it was slightly lower than last year. The peak mentions for the 95th Academy Awards in March 2023 reached 4.2K at the start of the ceremony. In 2024, the peak only reached 3.2K, and this occurred in the second hour of the broadcast.

The most mentioned films at the Oscars 2024

The most mentioned nominee for the Oscars on Twitch chats was Oppenheimer. The title was mentioned about 50-70 times per hour on a regular day, and this figure grew to 1.5K messages during the ceremony.

Second in peak mentions was Poor Things, its mentions increased to 1.3K times per hour. Interestingly, this rise coincided with an increase in mentions of Barbie — 1.1K messages during the peak hour.

Interestingly, the spikes in mentions often coincided. This occurred at moments when the winners were announced in categories where all three movies were represented. Twitch viewers flooded the chats with the names of their favorites before the ceremony hosts announced the winners from the stage. As for other films, the number of mentions was relatively small compared to the ones mentioned earlier.
