The сapital of Denmark hosted the finals of two esports world championships last weekend. K.B Hallen Arena was the location for the first RLCS Major in the 2024 season, while Royal Arena became the site for PGL Major Copenhagen 2024 playoffs.
Such large-scale events competed not only for offline audiences but also for viewers on streaming platforms, especially Twitch, a key service for live viewership of Rocket League and Counter-Strike esports. Of course, it’s no secret that CS tournaments attract significantly more viewers than Rocket League competitions. But what is their shared audience?
To assess audience overlap between two channels, one needs to know their Unique Authorized Viewers metric, or unique logged-in individuals who watch a content unit, game, or channel on a selected platform. Unique Viewers is a more precise metric for assessing audience reach, as it considers specific live viewers rather than their average or peak numbers on a broadcast (which may include bots, unauthorized users, etc.).
Why is it beneficial for streamers to know the audience overlaps with their colleagues? For instance, content creators with a significant audience overlap can conduct joint streams or collaborations, raid each other's channels, or even organize friendly trash-talk sessions to entertain their audience. On the other hand, understanding audience overlap is useful for assessing competition. If a streamer with whom you share an audience decides to host a major marathon or organize a giveaway, it's probably not the best idea to plan similar activities on the same dates and times.
Understanding audience overlap is also crucial for tournament operators. Each year, the number of esports titles increases, leading to more leagues and tournaments that require planning and clear scheduling. Often, these major events overlap in terms of timing, forcing them to share the audience. This was the case at the end of March with the PGL Copenhagen Major 2024, RLCS 2024 - Major 1, and VCT 2024 Masters Madrid.
Official channels of PGL and Rocket League are authorized on Streams Charts, so we analyzed the audience overlap between the PGL Copenhagen Major 2024 and RLCS 2024 - Major 1 as an example.
According to Streams Charts, the audience for PGL Copenhagen Major 2024 during the 28-31 March was almost three times bigger than that of RLCS 2024 - Major 1. At the same time, the shared audience turned out to be quite impressive: over 55,000+ viewers.
In other words, approximately 12% of the viewers of the Rocket League also watched the Counter-Strike Major, which was happening concurrently. At the same time, only 4.5% of the viewers of the official broadcast of the PGL Copenhagen Major 2024 on those same days were watching streams on the rocketleague channel.
Streams Charts also discovered the audience overlap between RLCS 2024 - Major 1 and broadcasts on the main English-language Rainbow Six channel. This overlap was over three times smaller, totaling just over 17,400+ unique viewers. Only 3% of RocketLeague channel viewers watched matches on the Rainbow6 channel, which showcased matches from regional leagues in Japan, South Korea, North America, and Brazil, but not Europe.
