On July 6, Meta launched Threads, a service meant to become a rival to Twitter. The announcement of the new social network caused a huge hype among internet users: according to Mark Zuckerberg, within the first seven hours after the release of Threads, over 10 million people registered on the app. Streams Charts has checked how actively Twitch users discussed the newsbreak.
To find out how the Twitch audience responded to the launch of Threads, we have analyzed the number of mentions of the social network in the platform's chats. Until the evening of July 5, the word "Threads" was hardly typed by users at all: the number of mentions was only a few dozen. However, the situation changed overnight on July 6: within just two hours, the number of mentions increased tenfold. By 01:00 AM on Thursday, it reached its first peak value of over 1.5K messages.
It is interesting that along with the increase in the number of mentions of the word "Threads", the number of mentions of the word "Twitter" also grew. Users actively compared both social networks when discussing them in chats. After a sharp jump on Wednesday evening, the number of mentions of the words "Threads" and "Twitter" gradually decreased over the course of several hours.
A new surge began on July 6 around noon, and by evening the number of messages reached a peak of 1686. One of the reasons for the second spike in activity was the news of a potential legal dispute between Twitter and Meta. Semafor revealed a fragment of an email in which Twitter lawyers allegedly accused Zuckerberg's company of poaching employees, as well as illegally using the company's trade secrets and intellectual property. The fact of a possible confrontation between Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg once again increased the mention of Threads and Twitter on Twitch chats.
It should be noted that the number of mentions of the word "Twitter" from July 5 to 7 was always 2-3 times higher than the number of mentions of the word "Threads". However, in our statistics, we have not taken into account messages from chatbots that could be promoting a streamer's personal page while mentioning Twitter.
