The last month of spring was rich in events: major esports tournaments affected the viewership of some categories and channels, and the trial between Johnny Depp and Amber Heard became one of the hot topics for discussion on broadcasts of streamers. In a new article, Streams Charts will name the most popular categories, channels and other Twitch statistics, as well as the most viewed clip of the month.

Most Popular Twitch Categories in May 2022

In May, the first four most popular categories on Twitch did not change. Just Chatting still holds the lead by a wide margin in Hours Watched, followed by League of Legends, GTA V and Valorant. At the same time, only LoL was able to improve its numbers over the month (+23%): this happened thanks to the Mid-Season Invitational 2022, which reached a record peak viewership for the series of 2.19 million concurrent viewers.

MSI 2022 was not the only big esports tournament to take place in May. Thanks to PGL Major Antwerp 2022 and ESL One Stockholm 2022, CS:GO and Dota 2 watch time increased by 59% and 30%, respectively. At the same time, the shooter has risen in the rating by two positions, and MOBA did so by one.

It is also worth noting that ALGS: Split 2 Playoffs ended on May 1, the first Apex Legends LAN tournament in 2.5 years, which gathered a record audience for the discipline. Such a major event brought the game to the attention of the community, resulting in a 22% increase in Hours Watched over the month.

Call of Duty: Warzone retained its 10th place, and its Hours Watched remained virtually unchanged. Elden Ring left the top 10 and was replaced by the Slots category, which grew by 24% in a month thanks to the increased activity of Trainwreckstv and, to some surprise, xQc who joined the list of gambling streamers.

Most Popular Twitch Channels in May 2022

The most watched Twitch streamer in May was Gaules. Thanks to the PGL Major Antwerp 2022 broadcasts, he managed to collect 76% more Hours Watched than in April. It should be noted that the Brazilian creator also updated the Peak Viewers record of his channel several times during the tournament.

The leader of the previous month, xQc, is on the second spot of the rating, as he amassed 16% less HW than Gaules. Asmongold retained the third place with 73% more Hours Watched than in April: this was due to a 65% increase in airtime in the Just Chatting category. Fourth in the ranking is loltyler1, who spent 2 times more time on the air than in April.

Due to the huge number of world championships held in May, four organizational channels made it into the top 10. PGL with broadcasts of the CS:GO Major and Riot Games with broadcasts of MSI 2022 in English are ranked 5th and 6th in the rating. In turn, ESL_DOTA2 took 8th place, and LCK_Korea reached 9th place.

Fifth among non-organizational channels was Trainwreckstv, one of the most popular streamers in the Slots category, with his Hours Watched being up 57% in May due to more airtime.

Ibai and auronplay metrics decreased by 27% and 39%, pushing Hispanic creators down one and three positions, respectively. Tarik retained the eighth place, and practically established himself in the status of one of the most popular community casters of Valorant esports.

Rounding out the top 10 streamers in May is HasanAbi and newcomer eliasn97, who is co-owner and CEO of the esports organization FOKUS. His best categories in May were Just Chatting, Valorant and FIFA 22. It should be noted that eliasn97 also held a quite popular charity stream, and it helped him collect way more Hours Watched than he usually does.

Most Popular Female Twitch Streamers in May 2022

Amouranth's Hours Watched dropped by 15% in a month, but that didn't stop her from reclaiming the top spot. It should be noted that she held the Streamer Royale event at the end of May, setting a record for her channel in terms of the average audience of broadcasts: read more about this in our review. In turn, Pokimane collected 84% more Hours Watched over the month and almost caught up with Amouranth by this indicator, but still only took second place in the top.

The platform's most popular VTuber, ironmouse, spent 48% less time on the air, and dropped by 7 positions in the ranking at once. In May, rivers_gg and Emiru left the top 10 females on Twitch, and were replaced by IamCristinini and 39daph.

Most Popular Twitch Broadcasts in May 2022

The most popular broadcast of May was conducted by Gaules, gathering more than 707.6K Peak Viewers at the match between Imperial and Cloud9 during PGL Major Antwerp 2022 Legends Stage. Note that if we did not consider only one broadcast per channel, then Gaules streams would take half of the rating. The only non-esports broadcast in the top 5 was aXoZer's May 25th stream, where the Spanish-speaking creator revealed his face to the public: read more about it in the article.

Broadcasts of the CS:GO Major Grand Final between NAVI and FaZe Clan on PGL and Maincast channels took 2nd and 6th places: they managed to collect 640.9K and 357.7K Peak Viewers, respectively. Broadcasts of the MSI 2022 final between RNG and T1 on LCK_Korea and Riot Games channels are ranked 4th and 5th in the rating. In turn, the broadcast of the Grand Final of the Dota 2 Major between TSM FTX and OG on the ESL channel took 9th place.

Most Viewed Twitch Clip in May 2022

The most popular clip of the month was the moment from the xQc’s broadcast. In the video, the donator accuses the streamer for losing a lot of money playing in a casino off stream, and opening cases in CS:GO, fueling his gambling addiction. In response, xQc stated that this is absolutely not the case.
