How Twitch reacted to the sensational defeats of Argentina and Germany at the World Cup

The FIFA World Cup kicked off in Qatar on November 20 and has already provided us with a couple of high-profile sensations. The Argentina national team featuring the legendary Lionel Messi, which is one of the strongest teams in the world, lost to the notorious outsider – Saudi Arabia. And the very next day after that, Germany, which was also considered the absolute favorite of the match, lost to Japan. These events were hotly discussed not only in everyday life and the media but also in Twitch chats.

Streams Charts analyzed the chats of all Twitch broadcasts over the past month and determined the dynamics of mentions of Japan, Germany, Argentina, and Saudi Arabia. Both before and after the start of the sensational matches, Argentina was discussed in the chats of the streaming platform much more than the other three countries. At the same time, Saudi Arabia was mentioned least of all. It should be noted that on November 20, the day of the start of the World Cup, the number of mentions of each country in the Twitch chat began to gradually increase.

The match between the national teams of Argentina and Saudi Arabia took place on November 22, while a significant increase in the mentions of these countries in chats began the day before this encounter. Specifically, on the day of the match, the word “Argentina” was featured in 87.7K messages, which is 1003% more than in the last 30 days. The number of mentions of Saudi Arabia increased by 2917% (the largest increase among the countries in question) and amounted to almost 17.3K.

On November 23, Germany lost to Japan, which was much less discussed than Argentina's loss. On the day of the meeting, Germany was mentioned more than 21.1K times in Twitch chat, which is almost 494% higher than the average for the last 30 days. The number of messages with the word “Japan” grew by 412% (the smallest increase) and amounted to more than 29.5K.

Interestingly, on the day of Japan's victory over Germany, the number of mentions of Blue Lock (football-themed manga and anime) in Twitch chat increased by 575%. Many Japanese soccer players are obsessed with anime, and the team’s uniforms were created by Adidas in collaboration with Blue Lock. After the sensational victory, the players of the national team became even more associated with the characters of the popular anime.

The FIFA World Cup matches on Twitch are streamed exclusively by the Brazilian casimito. Want to know how the broadcasts of the tournament affected its viewership statistics? Such knowledge is available to the owners of our PRO subscription, which is now sold at a 50% discount.
