In early June, Stranger Things (according to Nielsen) achieved the highest weekly total in the history of the company's TV show popularity ratings. In the new article, Streams Charts will compare the statistics of series with similar metrics from esports and streaming.
The first seven episodes of the fourth season of Stranger Things premiered on May 27 on Netflix. By the end of the first week, the series generated 85.6M Hours Watched, and in the second (record-breaking) week, it generated 120M Hours Watched. It should be noted that when it comes to this indicator, "Stranger Things" manage to overtake the closest pursuer, "All American", by more than five times.
A week after reaching the record Hours Watched, Stranger Things continued to hold the top spot among TV series. At the same time, “The Boys” climbed to the second spot having reached the first four episodes of the third season at that time.
There are a lot of parallels to be drawn when comparing Stranger Things' record-breaking metrics to esports and streaming metrics. In a week, the series collected about the same number of Hours Watched as the last year's main League of Legends tournament (Worlds 2021) on Twitch.
Felix xQc Lengyel, the most followed streamer on Twitch, reached the same Hours Watched figure in just half a year of his activity. Also, the series' record-breaking week on Netflix is equal to a whole month of GTA V broadcasts on Twitch in terms of Hours Watched. This is despite the fact that the game from Rockstar is consistently found among the platform’s top 10 most popular categories.
In addition, the weekly indicator of Stranger Things is comparable to Hours Watched generated by Raul Auronplay Alvarez across a whole year. Note that this streamer is one of the most popular Spanish creators on Twitch. Check out our Q2 2022 report for the top Hispanic streamers.
It is also worth mentioning the esports and streaming indicators, comparable to the performance of other popular series. For example, “All American”, which generated over 20.8M Hours Watched on Netflix between May 30 and June 5, reached the mark that Amouranth, one of the most followed female streamers on Twitch, generated in half a year of streaming.
Ranked #4 by Nielsen, “Obi-Wan Kenobi” generated almost 16M Hours Watched on Disney+ in a week – which corresponds to a month of streaming by Gaules, Brazil's most popular Twitch creator.
“Ozark” generated over 10.7M Hours Watched on Netflix between May 30 and June 5. It requires approximately six months for the Twitch esports tournaments in Super Smash Bros (the most popular fighting game on the platform) to reach the same mark.
