Twitch records worst monthly stats in five years

Twitch records worst monthly stats in five years
Share:

August was a tough month for Twitch, marking its lowest viewership in quite some time. Several factors played a role: growing competition, many top streamers going inactive, and a slowdown in the esports season. One of the key reasons, of course, is that Twitch recently started cracking down on streamers using bots. This viewbotting crackdown sent shockwaves through the platform’s viewership numbers. You can find a detailed breakdown of the month’s results in the latest Streams Charts article.

Twitch’s performance took a sharp dip in August compared to July: watch time dropped 9%, and peak concurrent viewership plunged by 73%. The decline in peak viewership has a simple explanation: Twitch was just returning to normal after an unusual surge. In July, Spanish streamer Ibai “Ibai” Llanos hosted his hugely popular boxing event, La Velada del Año V, which attracted over 9.33 million viewers at its peak and broke several Twitch records.

The drop in other metrics, including total watch hours and average viewers, was largely driven by Twitch’s crackdown on viewbotting. This had a major impact on the platform, bringing key numbers down to levels not seen since March 2020.

Twitch’s most popular categories saw little change in August. League of Legends, Counter-Strike, and Grand Theft Auto V held onto the top spots. Among them, only Counter-Strike managed to grow its watch hours compared to July, driven by major esports broadcasts from IEM Cologne 2025, BLAST Bounty Fall 2025 Season 2, and the Esports World Cup 2025.

Another standout was World of Warcraft, which saw its watch hours jump 107%. The surge came with the launch of The War Within’s third season, unlocking the Manaforge Omega raid. Top guilds immediately went head-to-head in the Race to World First, battling to be the first to defeat the final boss.

Fortnite also had a strong showing in August, topping all categories by peak active channels — 29,500 during the launch of Season 4. Thousands of streamers went live to broadcast the countdown and dive into the new content.

New Feature Alert: Streams Charts is proud to launch a brand-new tool for tracking the popularity of game genres across livestreaming platforms. On the dedicated page, you can filter data by platform, time period, stream language, or publisher. Note that many games span multiple genres, so their stats may appear across several categories.

Action continues to dominate Twitch, pulling well ahead of other genres. The race is closer further down the list: Adventure edged out RPG to crack the top three, while MMO drew more watch hours than Simulator. It’s worth noting that a single game can be classified under multiple genres.

The most-watched Twitch streamer in August 2025 was Nicholas “Jynxzi” Stewart, racking up 8.1 million Hours Watched. Much of his content that month centered on Clash Royale, and he also ran a “99-0” challenge with fellow streamerse Félix “xQc” Lengyel and Rani “StableRonaldo” Netzin.

Streamers 加藤純一うん〇ちゃん and Marc Robert “Caedrel” Lamont managed to stay in the top three, though their watch hours fell 26% and 46% from July. In contrast, Echo_Esports join the channels top thanks to the Race to World First coverage in the new World of Warcraft expansion. RTAinJapan streamed its summer charity marathon, and BLASTPremier broadcasted Counter-Strike tournaments.

The channel with the highest peak viewership was supernovaboxing, which drew nearly 750,000 concurrent viewers during the Supernova Strikers 2025 boxing event. The show is very similar to Ibai’s La Velada del Año, but spotlighting Mexican content creators. In second place was Mexican streamer Alana “Alanalarana” Scarlett, who competed in Supernova Strikers and streamed her fight live.

Russian streamers Vyacheslav “buster” Leont'ev and Dmitry “Dmitry_Lixxx” Likhanov earned spots in the rankings thanks to their community casting of IEM Cologne 2025. Meanwhile, Timothy “TimTheTatman” Betar stayed busy streaming during the beta of Battlefield 6, the latest installment in the iconic franchise.

Fifth place went to Kai Cenat, who streamed just once in August for a brief 25 minutes. During that session, one of today’s top streamers announced Mafiathon 3, set to begin today, on September 1.

Emily Beth “Emiru” Schunk of the OTK Network has topped Twitch’s female streamer rankings for several months and closed out the summer season as the leader. Hot on her heels in second place was Mexican streamer Alanalarana, who set a personal channel record by peaking at 268,100 viewers while streaming her fight at the Supernova Strikers boxing event.

Among other female streamers, Wendy “wendolynortizz” Ortiz deserves a mention — her average viewers dropped by 50%, yet she still stayed in the top 10. Imane “Pokimane” Anys and Samantha “Rivers_gg” Rivera also experienced major viewership drops and fell out of the rankings in August.
